Subject: Fixing POP problems in 1-2-3 steps
Ever encounter one of these problems with POP?

- Your messages suddenly stopped downloading
- You have to re-enable POP every time to continue downloading
messages
- Only some messages are being downloaded while others are being
skipped
- The same message is being downloaded over and over again
- ALL your messages are being downloaded again

If so, here are 3 simple solutions that can help fix your problem:

1. Try enabling recent mode in your POP client by replacing
"[email address]" in the Username field of your POP client settings
with "recent:[email address]", and configure your POP client to
leave mail on the server. Recent mode only fetches the last 30 days of
mail, so it's ideal if you don't want your smartphone to download
thousands and thousands of messages. Disclaimer: If you don't leave
messages on server in your mail client settings, your messages may get
moved to Trash after download. For more information on recent mode,
check out http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=47948

2. If you're not using recent mode, ensure that your email client is
NOT configured to leave mail on the server.

3. Try deleting the entry for your Gmail account in your POP client
and then re-adding it with all the correct settings.

If these steps don't resolve your problems, check out Gmail IMAP!

Subject: Re: Fixing POP problems in 1-2-3 steps
Is there a place where the information is at a more basic level?  What
I want to do is get my road runner email sent to gmail.  I think
someone else was asking a similar question but it hadn't been
answered.  Everybody knows my road runner email address and I have
listservs to there, so if I have to change to a web based email to get
email on my laptop, I want that mail to be forwarded to it.

Of course, if I knew how to get an email program here that I could
hook to my road runner email, I would just as soon do that.  But I
don't know how to do that either,  For some reason this mac, instead
of having an email program like Outlook (or the one I use on the Linux
computer my sons set up, Konqueror) directed me to a web based email
which is part of a service I have to pay 99 bucks a year for.  I kind
of resent that.

I put this here because I know POP has something to do with telling an
email program what server to look for the email on.   I know what to
put in the boxes for incoming mail server and outgoing mail server on
Konqueror or Evolution email to get them to get road runner mail.
But I don't know how to get my road runner mail on gmail.....or how to
get an email program compatible with mac onto my laptop that i could
then tell to go get my road runner mail.

I don't know what a "client" is in your above discussion, which right
away kept me from going any farther with trying to understand it.
Thanks

Hi,

It doesn't make any sense to me to change my POP settings in
Thunderbird, if some messages download and some don't on the same
day !
Like messages 1,2,4, and 6 will download, but 3 and 5 stay on Gmail's
server.

Is there any other solution?

Thanks,
Shahar

Hi everybody,
sorry for my poor English, please, reply me in an "easy" language.
I'm in a strange situation: till few hours ago everything was ok.
Now Thunderbird as me for password to send an email. Even I introduce
the right password, it keeps asking me (without sending the email).
At the same time I cannot download new emails (Thunderbird tells there
are not new mail, but there are).
If I try to login via browser, everything works (I can send email and
I see the new coming ones).

What should I do?
Is this a server problem due to a service on the server?
Should I just wait....?

Please, help me

Thanks

Hi Stefano,

May your problem, and mine originate in Thunderbird, and not in Gmail.
However, are you entering the same password in Thunderbird as you are
when you are logging into Gmail on the web-browser?

You may want to write down all your passwords that are kept in
Thunderbird's memory, and then "tell" Thunderbird to forget your
passwords.
press the Download mail button, and you will be asked for a password.
copy-paste the password from someplace that you can see what you are
typing, like a word processor, so you are certain that the password is
correct.

Hope this helps,
Shahar

Hello Gmail guide,
I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with my gmail account.
My gmail account [email address] is no longer accessible and
has randomly stopped allowing me to sign in. My friends email me there
and have their emails bounce back. First i thought my email address
was compromised so i sent in a report. They said the results were
inconclusive. Second, I thought maybe id just have my password reset,
yet when i tried to get it done, it said that [email address]
doesn't exist. It sure does because i use POP with outlook and i have
tons of emails saved. I need help and google support is about the
worst to me. I cant call one specific person to help me, all they tell
me is that everything is inconclusive. I had to create this account so
that i could just post here in hopes that SOMEONE WITH GMAIL WOULD
HELP ME. If I cant get my gmail account, and theres no possibility of
security question, and my friends email bounce back, then something
happened to my account. PLEASE HELP ME. I am a college student and use
that email address a lot for job opportunities and internships and
such. I am supposed to be receiving many emails soon about
acceptances. I NEED HELP PLEASE HELP ME IN SOME WAY. I have a TON of
recent emails saved with outlook in proof that it is my account.
Please help me.

Hey Shahar!

The situation is that I have the same issue as Stefano, so it might
not be Thunderbird (I'm using outlook anyway). I also tried other e-
mail clients, but it was still not working. Is there an possibility to
resolve the issue? It might can be also my computer settings, but I
don't really understand how setting are changing whithout me changing

Can someone please help??

Hi. I have a similar problem and am pretty much tearing my hair out. I
use Googlemail to retrieve messages from another server (Business 1st)
which use a non-Google email address. Following a problem in receiving
messages, I contacted my ISP who told me to change my POP3, which I
did. However, although I am now receiving emails from the other server
via Google, which is what I wanted, I'm also being inundated with
literally thousands of old messages, mostly spam. I've so far deleted
over 14,000 old messages and am at the end of my tether! There seems
to be no way of stopping these repeating messages.

Thanks in advance if you can help.

Both of them is stop received and download mails.
It said that the server is experiencing a problem or some sort.
I tried to recreate my account in apple mail, but even it's not
recognize in the gmail server.
That's so annoying.

Hi,

I download too many times all my mails and I think :

This is often caused by users frequently downloading their entire >accounts to a mail client or using third-party software that automatically logs in to their account and is not supported by Google.

But that's begin to fail downloading two days ago , what can I do ?

Hi there,

My Thunderbird 2 client works well sending/receiving, for the regular
mail traffic.

Yesterday
I wanted to download all messages and did the proper settings for POP
at Gmail (all messages).
I started the download and the downloads came in batches between which
I had to do the download messages command for each batch.
In the first batch it downloaded some 300 messages from end of March
until now.
The second batch started with the ca 350 oldest messages (2006)
Theafter it downloaded in in batches of appr 250-350 messages until
mid 2007.
Thereafter it download in batches of 30 messages until Oct 2007
Thereafter it downloaded in batches of 3-10 messages, and I stopped
the downloading when I had reached end of October 2007.

Today
I started again and it kept the level of ca 3-10 messages per batch
for a total of appr 150 messages (mid-November 2007).
Thereafter Thunderbird reported "no new messages on server".

Is the problem related to the, according to others, automatic blockage
when in a relatively short time downloading many messages ( ca 6000)
via POP, or could it be something else?

Ideas anyone? Would be great if some from the Gmail staff could
respond.

Gmail - please help.
I stopped receiving emails to my blackberry because I changed my gmail
password.  This caused a series problem.  Now I can't even receive
emails to my outlook.

When I try to Enable POP on my gmail settings and then save it. The
setting change doesn't stick.  The people at blackberry believe that
the reason why I am not receiving emails to my outlook or blackberry
is because this setting I am trying to save is not saving and reverts
to having No pop settings whatsoever.

Please help. I need these emails!!

Am I to understand there are no "help" available for gmail.  This is
frustrating.  No one has answered my questions since this morning.
What I have is so technical that I am unable to grasp it.  What is
"recent mode."  How do I reconfigure "pop client?"  This is not
helpful.  I wish there was a customer service where I could pay to get
help.

I am having problems storing the "enabled pop account" with Pop
Download.  Each time I leave the site it goes removed the check and I
have to do it again there redownloading my emails.

I'm hoping this will work.
I followed all three steps recommended by the Gmail rep above, but
none has worked.
My gmail emails have suddenly stopped downloading using Outlook
Express. Everything appears to be configured correctly. When
troubleshooting, I get the following message:

The following issues were found:
The SMTP Server responded incorrectly to the QUIT command. Help me fix
this issue
We were unable to send a report to Google automatically.

When I click on "Help me fix" the message reads:
We're unable to recognize the specific issue. Please contact us for

And when I click on "contact us," I get the endless loop of searching
help topics and known issues, where this topic does not appear.

Can anyone help?

thank you,

Issues with POP mail server at Google Apps

1)      POP mail is broken… this started about 3 months ago…
a.      Issue: If I get mail via Pop, its 28 day out of date compared to
WEB interface or IMAP.
This was tested with Eudora 7 Thunderbird 2 and Outlook on a PC. On a
Mac we tested with Apple Mail, Thunderbird and Eudora 6. All have the
same problems. So it’s NOT a client issue!, also the clients work just
fine with other ISP’s and a local exchange server.

b.      When setting up a POP client, it make a request for messages to
your POP server. My account at GMAIL has >15K messages, your POP
server give only 10-300 messages at a time, so I must do many download
to get all of the mail into the client…(this was real painful for
testing)  adding recent:[[email address]] did not help this issue.
Most all ISP that we have tested with give us all the mail on one
request, not in small block like your server.

c.      All clients are set up to leave mail on server for 30days
.
d.      There is a forum that others are complaining of the same issues at:
http://groups.google.co.ke/group/Gmail-Help-POP-and-IMAP-en/browse_th...

Thanks Tom Lafleur for stating that the GMAIL is broken.

I have also noticed this. I have sent messages to my secretary and
became concerned when she didn't reply. After several times of this,
we were talking and I began wondering if she was receiving the
messages. I had her send me a message and I sent one to her. (this is
using GMAIL TO GMAIL through Outlook 2003 and Outlook Express). The
messages didn't arrive. some never arrived, some arrived days later
(and were filed in the middle of my old e-mails that I had already
read - but were filed in the correct date).

We need e-mail support that is reliable. I can not believe that it is
possible for either of these situations to occur -
1) EMAIL sent but never received and no acknowledgement of a problem
(yes email used is correct),
2) EMAIL sent but delayed in receiving (sometimes by days) but
delivered with correct date and filed among old and previously read e-
mails.

The latter problem can cause serious credibility problems since most
people think EMAILS are delivered instantly - but when you show them
your old messages for someone to verify that you never received the
message, days later the message will appear - and marked as never
read.

I HAD ANOTHER EMAIL ACCOUNT YEARS AGO (NAME WITHHELD) THAT BECAME
UNRELIABLE IN DELIVERING EMAIL ON A REGULAR AND TIMELY BASIS. It
turned out to be due to overload - a glitch in their system caused
some of the e-mails to be inadvertantly deleted or "stuck" in a hold.

MY SOLUTION THEN WAS TO FIND ANOTHER RELIABLE E-MAIL PROVIDER.

I LIKE GOOGLE AND DON'T WANT TO DO THAT.

I have exactly same problem as yours.
I tried to use Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, Outlook Express 6.0, The Bat 3
Same problem persists: some messages are not downloaded even I can see
them through browser.

How to solve this problem?

Dear Gmail staff!!! SOS!!! Please help!
This problem is really really frustrating!

For several reasons I cannot and don't want to use IMAP, I need POP
access but it does not work!

I want to stay with Gmail.

I want to explain in details the behavior of my Gmail account and POP
clients (Thunderbird, Outlook express are same in this issue. They are
configured correctly).

Interesting, when I open both browser and POP client, then I start
receiving messages by POP client which were sent after I open client
and browser.
However, if some messages came to my gmail account when the client was
off  I cannot download them after starting client .

Moreover, in the settings of Gmail account it is said: POP is enabled
for all mail that has arrived since Jul 17.

To make more clear, today, July 18, before using POP Client
(Thunderbird) I received few messages on Gmail accout.
Then I started Thunderbird, it said: no new messages.
Then I sent one message to my Gmail account from some other account
through browser.
And Wow! Thunderbird received it, but could not receive messages which
arrived just few hours earlier.
And interestingly, in the settings of Gmail account it is still
written: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since Jul 17.

As if none of POP client tried to download any mail from Gmail account
yet.

I hope this explanation is clear enough, I posted it with hope that
some one can help me to solve this problem.

Than you in advance!
Dmitry

I am also having problems getting my mail in Outlook.  Mine has only
been going on today.  I can access my Gmail via the web but am not
getting any email from any of my Gmail accounts.  This needs to get
fixed ASAP!

I have the opposite problem. I can access GMAIL through personal
emails, however if I want to send a page from an internet sight it
keeps getting returned to me saying the Pop server won't send. Any
suggestions??

Are you getting any error messages?
