Update: I decided to try a wired network connection directly into a
DSL modem, bypassing my Airport Xtreme (N) router, and the problem
seems to have disappeared. So it seems that there is an issue when
Entourage, Gmail and an Apple Airport Xtreme are in the mix.
Interestingly I don't have this problem at home, where I also have an
Airport Xtreme. However I have a much faster Roadrunner connection
there.
So the problem is resolved, but I have no idea why!
