I finally found a solution for our little problem in the german help
pages under "Known Issues". There they wrote this:
Please try logging in to your account through our secured interface,
available via https://mail.google.com. Be sure to use this exact URL,
with no characters after '.com.' If this resolves the issue, we
suggest that you enable the 'Always use HTTPS' setting in your
account.
If you continue to experience difficulties, please access your mail
from the older version of Gmail while we work to resolve the issue.
That's what helped me out. IMAP works just liek before. Seems like one
login vie the https-Gateway was required. I could not qite figure out
why, but anyways... I hope I could help you.
First of all, I really appreciate the response and help.
I've tried this but it does not help, I changed the passsword and
retried once again disabling and re-enabling IMAP to no avail.
I do not understand why no authorized google employee is available to
answer these kind of issues.
If anyone has any idea on even how to contact google It would be
helpful.
This issue is weird, the account has been working well for some time
now with no changes except for using IMAP to fetch mail, and now there
is no answer from anyone...

My IMAP is broken as well. It had been working perfectly ever since I
created my gmail account. However, I started experiencing login
errors as described here .. the "Web login required (Failure)" error.
I followed the instructions above, and it seemed to work. I had no
problems yesterday. Then, today, I'm broken again with the same error
and can't seem to fix it in the same way. I wonder if it wasn't a
coincidence that it worked.
Can somebody help? I've search high and low (probably like many other
people) and can't find a solution. PLEASE HELP!!

I went ahead and tried the CAPTCHA link, but I must note that prior to
doing it .. my email was working. I hope this keeps it working *sigh*
since everybody seems to be taking shots in the dark with this issue.

THanks for the tip... this fixed it for me as well...
Quite annoying though... It could have mentioned that in the error
message or at least after the web login or something...

I am accessing Gmail via Thunderbird on a few machines (IMAP), and
now, every couple of days, all logins fail, and I get the web login
required message. Sure, I can (and do) login via the web (and now
there's an extra security phrase to enter), but this is absurd. If
it's not slow, or the servers aren't unresponsive, now they throw this
at us. It's free, so I can't expect anything in the way of support,
but I'll likely go back to using my paid Fastmail account full time.
I can't believe a company as large as Google can't get e-mail right.
i couldn access with Apple Mail 3 via IMAP,
for me the CAPTCHA link didn't work, but after sending a message an re-
authenticating to SMTP, the IMPA is working fine again ...
might have to do with a recent password ...
