Same problem here, spam keeps bursting out of teh mailbox. Checking as
"spam" has (seemly) no effect. A few hours later all the messages are
back.

Can anyone please fix this.

Gmail has alvways been a good mailsystem without the spam-thread. This
seems to be not teh cas the last days.

Hi everyone,

Sorry to hear that this problem returned. Thanks to your reports, we
were able to find and fix a problem in our classification system.
Please let me know if you continue to experience this issue.
Specifically, let me know if:

- You are seeing the majority of your spam messages in your inbox
instead of in Spam.
- You see lots of legitimate messages placed in the Spam folder by
mistake.

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

As far as I am concerned, the problem was never fixed.
Since over a month ago, I have been getting several SPAM emails per
day.
Hopefully they will stop now.

Hi Jeppe,

Could you clarify whether the messages are being classified as Spam or
going straight to your inbox? Also, if messages are going to your
inbox, can you let me know approximately how many messages are
correctly classified each day?

If bad messages are going to Spam, then Gmail's filters are doing
their job correctly. Similarly, if you're getting a lot of correctly
classified spam, it's normal to see a message or two slip into your
inbox.

Let me know,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,
so even if I've created filters and the spams are still going to the
Spam Folder (even though I have those filters set to DELETE), these
filters are doing their job?   I used to rarely get any spam on Gmail,
and now I'll get 10-15 a day in the Spam folder, and these still have
subjects with the usual ViagraCialis, etc. and other disgusting words
I've put into the filter to delete).

This is really annoying, and I've thought of not using Gmail anymore.
Other free email accounts don't seem to cause users this much Spam
maintenance.  I know there's no perfect email account that won't have
any spam...but so much on a daily basis??  Plus I still have to check
the Spam folder for any good emails that may have mistakenly be
labeled as Spam.

not frustrated with Google...but with these ##@(**^   spammers!!!!

I just want to report (hopefully to the Gmail Guide, Sarah) that this
issue is still going on. I've gotten 7 messages that have come through
into my inbox today that are actually spam. Untill a few weeks ago, I
had almost never had this happen. I do get a lot of spam into the spam
box normally. I commonly have in the range of 6,000 to 7,000 items in
my spam box. But I don't usually get any in my inbox. Why is this
happening each day now? Is there anything I can do to correct it other
than setting specific filters? I use Apple Mail synced via IMAP. I
drag the items that are spam into the IMAP spam folder. I thought I
read on the help pages that marks them as spam. True? Less spam is why
I started using Google, and it could also be the reason I leave if it
doesn't get corrected. I feel this would be true of many other people,
and so I think it's important for Google to pay attention to this
issue. Thanks for any help you can give me. I've been impressed with
your spam filters until now, so I have confidence that you'll be able
to fix it.

Since exactly 8am MST this morning, my inbox started receiving spams
at about 10 per hour.  I have a high spam load normally, but it does
not make it to my Inbox (apart from one occasionally).

It's as though google flipped a switch at precisely 8am to allow spam
through to my Inbox.

I haven't changed anything, I have no filters on the account and I'm
marking the spam as spam by dragging to my Spam box.

What's happening?  Has google broken something?

Hi everyone,

A few quick things. First, Gmail doesn't cause spam to come to your
account. If a spammer gets your email address, then you'll get spam,
regardless of what domain hosts your mail. What we do try to do is
keep the spam out of your inbox. We also reject some spam mail before
it even gets to your account, but we only like to bounce messages when
we're really sure they originated from a bad sender. In case we make a
mistake, we send a bounce message back to the sender to let them know
why we stopped their mail.

zawie, about how much spam mail do you usually get in an hour? If you
get a very large number of spam messages, then a very small number may
end up in your inbox.

Let me know,

Sarah

Seeing the same with my hosted account.  Got 10 spams earlier today,
marked em as spam and now I have 10 more in just a few hours.

This just could be fluctuation in spam sending rates, and google's
filters are working normally, but only catching the same rate of a
higher volume of messages.

Unfortunately there may be little Google can do about this; my email
address has been publicly viewable on the net for probably 7+ years,
every spammer in the world probably has it :)   It would be cool if
there were some 'ultra conservative' spam option.

I got NO spam in my gmail until a few days ago.  Now I get at least 20
per day.  They do ALL go to my spam folder, but when I opened one to
see if there was an ubsubscribe link I noticed that it says it is sent
to a different Gmail account.  I know I could be listed as a BCC and
that is why MY email doesn't show up in the header, But since all
these spam messages are sent to Gmail accounts, is it possible that
they are fake gmail accounts and have filters which send the spam
messages out to others?????  I know that I have 2 gmail accounts in my
home, and a filter set up in account A forwards my mail to account B,
and when I open the email (in account B), it shows nothing in the
header which tells that it is a Fwd - it only shows it is sent to
account A.

Quick question.

Is there an option that automatically bounces ALL spam-designated
emails away (and tell them to contact me personally or through
Facebook, etc..) if it's a mistake?

Thanks!

When I read these SPAM reports, my first thought was "20 per day and
these people think they have a problem?".  My spam folder went from 20
or so to over 300 per day.  If I didn't check my mail over the weekend
I can have over 700 SPAM messages in my SPAM folder.  I can watch them
come in two or three at a time every minute of the day.  Everything
from male enhancement to work from home to free this or that, chat
with me, see my pics, you name it, I get it.  While it all goes into
the SPAM folder, it makes it virtually impossible to pick out one
message that may be in there by mistake, which has happened on several
occaisions.  I just don't have time to go through 6 to 16 pages of
SPAM messages.  Something happened at Gmail a few months ago.  I don't
know that it was but it definitely hasn't been fixed.

Hello - since last week, I am having a similar problem, where I am
receiving a lot of SPAM messages delivered to my inbox.  I would say
it is about 20-30 SPAM emails a day.  I typically only get about 20-30
emails total per day, so now I am receiving about 40-60 emails a day.

Similar problem - For several months now I have been getting about 10
to 20 SPAM emails delivered to my inbox every day.  This is double the
amount of legitimate email that I receive.  I have been faithfully
marking each one as SPAM, but there has been no improvement.  99% of
these emails are related to fast cash/financial offers.  It's driving
me crazy, and there appears to be no effective way to filter these
emails out.  My yahoo account, which I've had much longer, does not
experience this problem.  Is there any end in sight?  Is marking these
messages as SPAM doing anything?  At this point, enough time has
passed that I would think the filter would have figured this out...

doesn't make sense that I'd get so much spam in my folder. Like
another user said above, my other free email accounts (hotmail and
yahoo) don't seem to have this issue and I use these around the web
more freely. What can be done about it? I just delete the messages,
but they seem to be never ending!

I've been getting some missed detections in my inbox over the past
week that the spam filter should have easily caught - spoofed From:,
originating from a Spanish IP, marked as high importance, HTML content
type with just an image URL link and the alt tag "Click here to view
as a webpage." So a really blatant spam pattern. I've been marking
them as spam for several days but they keep coming through. I can
easily delete-filter these myself but want to help improve the spam
filter for everyone else since it's obviously missing something.

I'm getting a lot of fake user names that are like this:  Alphonso
Andel or Albert Alonzo.  They are ALL viagra ads.  So I did, as you
said you might do, make a delete filter.  Then I look at my Trash a
couple times a day, select the obvious ones with the checkbox and
select 'More Actions'.  I then click 'Report Spam'.  It keeps the
annoyances out of my Inbox AND still allows me to report them as spam.

Same problem here. I never used to have any spam make it trhough the
filter, but as of last weekend or so, I've had a handful sneaking
through every day. Worse, though, is that they cover a variety of
topics, and neither the senders nor the words used are distinct enough
for me to create filters for them all -- at least, not without
filtering out some legimate email in the process.

When I was on Earthlink several years ago, it was possible to force
people not in your contact/safe list to verify that they are actually
sending you a message. In other words, they'd send me a message, they
would get an automated reply asking them to confirm the sending, and
if they did, the message would go through and the person would be
added to the safe list; otherwise, the message would be deleted.

Any chance of getting something like that in gmail?

I like that idea as well. But what I would like to see is a button
that would allow us to send our spam to a server where GMail will
automatically delete these emails from getting sent through to
anyone's email.

I get the same emails in my spam folder everyday and several times a
day, from the same senders. I understand that the Spam folder is doing
what it's supposed to be doing, but, once you receive these just a few
times and they are showing up in the Spam folder already, shouldn't
Google be making it so that these don't even make it to our addresses?

I know it's possible. I know there are sites, government sites that
you can send phishing emails and spams to that record these addresses.
Why can't these spam emails be blocked? If companies and corporations
can block specific emails from coming through, why can't Google's
GMail system do it?
