When I first created my account, the spam detection was working
flawlessly. However, for some reason about 2-3 weeks ago something
changed and the floodgates opened up. Although I have been carefully
flagging spam that gets into my inbox, the detection is not getting
any better and its only picking up about 2/3 of my spam.

Unfortunately, no. The only influence you have over the gmail spam filter is the spam/not-spam buttons.
It isn't unusual to see temporary fluctuations in the effectiveness of
the spam filter. Perhaps you accidentally exposed your address to a
new group of spammers, or perhaps the spammers have found a new
technique to evade some of gmail's filters. You'll probably find that
it recovers after a while, especially if you continue marking spam. If
you can identify specific characteristics of the spam, you can create
a filter to automatically delete them.
What if it stops altogether? I haven't seen it flag a single email
(obvious ones, like emails written entirely in Russian, or including
the word viagra every viagra fifth viagra word =P).
It is getting extremely annoying and I am wondering if I somehow
disabled the spam catcher -- even though I keep marking spam.

I'm in the same boat. Spam filtering was working perfectly then about
4 days ago it just stopped all together. Now nothing is being marked
as spam. It's like someone just switched off the spam filter. These
messages should not be getting through even the most retarded of spam filters so it's not a teach the filter a lesson time, because it's not
learning. It's just not there anymore.

I may be new on this, but the reason i'm visiting this group is just
what this is about.
SInce a day or 4 it looks like teh Gmail Spam filter was switched off.
I wondered if there was a technical problem (could be..) but it
doens't seem te be so. I'm receiving a bulk of spam and none of the
messages are detected by the filter. Tough untill an few days ago this
spam filter was working perfectly and none of the settings were
changed.

i have exactly the same problem and am going crazy trying to find a
way to contact google. i had a spam quota of 1% unter sometime
yesterday, when it changed to 99% spam from one minute to the next.
clearly the spam filter just stopped working altogether.
does google have ANY way of contacting them? even a 900 number would
be alright. are they even reading this forum? :-(

There are "gmail guides" that read this forum. Perhaps one of them
will comment.
I have seen a few threads like this over the last couple days, so it
is possible there is a bug affecting some quantity of users. (My gmail spam filter is working just as well as always.)
Yeah, this seems to be a last-7-days sort of problem. It's not
completely systemic, though. No one else I know with gmail is having
this problem. I guess I'll set up a new gmail account, forward all my
mail, and hope it works better this time.
Me too. I've been getting gobs of spam in my inbox for the last
several days. It's happening in both my regular GMail and hosted
domain GMail accounts. Google, please address this! I can barely keep
up with all this spam!

This is different. I've experienced the temporary fluctuations you
speak of before, and I always shrug it off realizing that spam is an
ongoing war between the spammers attempting to circumvent the filters
and Gmail trying to keep them out. Sure enough, within a few days it
always tapers off and gets right.
This is totally different. This is like the spam filter got partially
switched off, a flood of painfully obvious spam, with some users
reporting hundreds getting through into their inbox and almost nothing
getting to the spam folder. It feels more like a problem on Gmail's side, not a sudden increase in brilliant spamming technique or
accidentally getting on a spammer's list. Look:

Based on the accumulated evidence, I agree that is how it looks.
I'm pretty sure the guides have read these threads by now, so let's
give them a little time to look into it and see if something needs to
be tweaked.
Thanks for your reports. We identified a problem with our
classification rules and have just fixed it. Please let me know if you
continue to experience this problem. Specifically, let me know if:
- You are seeing the majority of your spam messages in your inbox
instead of in Spam.
- You see lots of legitimate messages placed in the Spam folder by
mistake.

I'll will wait a couple of day's more to see if the fix will work
cause so far for me it did not.
I am still (21:44pm Spain-Europe) getting Spam directly into my in box
and not into my Spam folder,..I have tried to stop most of the spam messages using filters but they also don't seem to work. Everything
was working fine until 3 or 4 days ago.

For the 2-3 years that I have used Gmail I have seriously had about 4
pieces of spam each year ever make its way through to my spam folder...a fact which I have boasted about several times! But like
many of you, for the last month my spam folder has been inundated with
spam and its super annoying! Especially as there is NO WAY of
contacting anyone at Gmail! SOMEONE AT GMAIL HELP!!! DO SOMETHING
PLEASE! =)

I'd like to clarify -- if you're getting spam in the Spam folder, then
our filters are doing their job! alanah, most likely a spammer got
hold of or guessed your email address. It's unfortunate, but a very
common occurrence.
jvanpassel, are you getting a lot of mail in your Spam folder too? Or
is all the spam going to your inbox? If you're seeing several hundred
spam messages in your Spam folder, it's normal to see a few in your
inbox. But if you're hardly seeing any spam in your Spam folder, and
lots in your inbox, I'd like to take a look.

There are lots of reasons why you might get lots of spam. They
include:
- Dictionary spammers who randomly guess millions of account names at
gmail and keep sending to the ones that don't bounce.
- Giving out your email address on a website where it was leaked
accidentally or deliberately to spammers.
Like many, I've been flooded with an exceptionally high volume of
SPAMs lately - this morning's count alone > 50 into my spam folder +
some into my inbox. I'm normally quite "conservative" in gmail usage,
don't response to unsolicited or junk mails, and forward incoming
mails claiming to be from known banking/financial concerns directly to
their respective Internet Security email sites.
I've read all comments in this discussion. Filters no longer seem to
work, and characteristics of subject matter received get broader and
broader, typically from noxious frauds to disgusting adverts.
[Last week I even got a ridiculous one with letterhead claiming to be
in response from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation. I printed it
out and sent it c/o US Embassy's attention].
Can one have spams AUTOMATICALLY and IMMEDIATELY deleted as it comes?
Help!!!!

Getting lots of spam in your spam folder is not at all unusual and
does not indicate any problem with your account. In fact, it indicates
that gmail's spam filter is working effectively.
Gmail has made a design decision not to automatically delete incoming
spam. This allows you to verify the filtering for accuracy if you
wish. If you aren't getting non-spam in your spam folder, you should
simply ignore it. Spam in your spam folder isn't doing you any harm
and will automatically go away after 30 days.
