When I send a test email to myself I don't receive any notification
that it has arrived. Gmail seems to just disappear it. It shows in the
sent mail folder but the actual received emil is nowhere to be found.
This happens even when I send an email to my isp account, gmail pops
in to the isp account and retrieves it and then just deletes it. So, I
can't read the headers and see the path the email took or perform any
kind of analysis on it or check if the network is working. I have no
proof that it was delivered.
This seems a bit weird to me. I know that gmail keeps only one copy of
mail but clearly a sent mail is different from a received mail and I
should have a copy of each. This was certainly the case with Eudora.

I have concluded that the gmail programmers have decided that it is
pointless physically sending an email if it is addressed to the sender
so they simply place it in the sent mail folder. It never actually
goes out. Everything else seems to work fine.
It's a shame that no one from gmail has responded to this message.
Why can't I download messages I send from my POP client?
In order to avoid duplicates, Gmail doesn't download copies of
messages sent from within your client. However, these messages will
appear in the inbox of your web Gmail.

This is happening to me too, even when I'm sending to a different
email address (different domain and everything) that happens to be
forwarding to my Gmail account (i.e., the sending account). It's not
really any of Gmail's business what my other mail server is choosing
to do with the mail...it should still hit the other server and THEN be
forwarded and appear in my inbox. This makes testing things like
Google Calendar invites and such really difficult when you want to see
how they appear to others.

I agree. I wish someone from Gmail would respond to this issue.
I've taken the test a little further. I setup a spare email address at
my ISP. I added this account to gmail so that it could pop-in and
retrieve mail. I then changed the password so gmail couldn't access
it. Then I sent a test from gmail to the spare account. Using the
ISP's online reader I could see that the email had been received at
the ISP. I then changed the password back to original value and asked
gmail to recheck. Gmail accesed the email and deleted it from the ISP
server. Gmail showed in its history log that one email had been
retrieved. Gmail did not make the incoming message available for
reading, it simply deleted it. The only copy remaing was the original
outgoing message held in the sent-mail folder.
This is so frustrating and wrong. If anything gmail could delete the
outgoing message when picking up the incoming. The received message
could then show all the apropriate routing headers and it could be
labeled to appear in both the inbox and the sent-mail folder.

message is not relevent to the current discussion as it discusses
messages sent from the email client. This discussion is about messages
sent from gmail - nothing to do with email clients.

reporting and complaining about this and related "features" for years,

think it will ever get fixed.

I'm having a similar problem. I belong to a few organizations, and
when I send mail out to a group of people, I always copy myself on the
message. This allows me to organize the messages in my inbox into the
appropriate folders and keep track of the threads starting with the
original message. I use Outlook 2003 as my mail client, and I POP my
mail from Google. When I send a message from Outlook and copy myself,
it actually shows up in the inbox on the online web version of gmail.
However, those messages will not POP back into the inbox in Outlook.
Strange.
Thanks for making this a priority. I have several users on Gmail
accounts who often send emails to themselves. Since migrating to
Gmail, these emails don't make it to their Outlook clients. They want
to send a CC: to self in some situations. Others send a quick email
to self with a reminder in the subject (example: "subject: confirm 4pm
meeting with CEO"). I hope this bug can be corrected ASAP. I have
many users on my back asking me why I moved them to a mail solution
that lacks what they consider a basic feature. Take care.

Another "me too". This is a major pain. I recently changed a lot of
email lists I participate in to use and send to my gmail address,
whereupon my messages stopped showing up on the list, as best I could
tell. It turns out, they were making it to the list, because people
occasionally replied to them, but I never once saw a copy of my
messages to any of these lists. It was driving me crazy trying to
figure out why, and now I know, gmail is dain-bramaged. Gmail is
quietly dropping messages sent from me to me into the bit bucket, even
when they are indirectly sent such as via an email distribution list.
This is completely unacceptable, and I'm moving my email access to
another provider. To heck with this nonsense.
When a message is sent to a mailing list, and then sent back to the
sending subscriber, it is altered in ways that make the copy sent back
more useful for archiving than the sent message. For example, the
subject line might get tagged and/or numbered, and the headers and
footers generated by the mailing list might get appended. The
sequence of numbers or threads of conversation in the email client are
disrupted if the messages are not echoed back as received from the
mailing list.
It would be good to document the rules gmail uses to decide if a
message is duplicate, and should be deleted when it comes back in. It
would be better to have a way to turn those rules off, either
individually or collectively, depending on what the rules are, in
particular.
The workaround I've resorted to is to set up a filter that stars all
messasges that are from my gmail address ...they still don't go to my
inbox, but atleast I can find them more easily than in the 'All
mail'.
Another alternative could be to create a label called 'Reminders' and
filter them into that label. I guess I could theoretically create a
label called "My real inbox" and filter everything into it - but
doesn't that just seem soooooo silly?
I've been reading that this quirk/bug/feature has been frustrating
many users for a LONG time (years!), has there really been no solution
provided yet? Any update would be much appreaciated...

I'm very annoyed by this as well. I've taken to dragging the message
from my "sent" folder to the folder where I keep the group messages.
Yesterday I replied to one of those which replied only to myself
rather than to the group as it would have if I had received the
message from the group.
Please make this "don't clutter my inbox" behavior optional. Please
consider it a different message if the "From" line is different.

I have a "new" (for me) scenario that makes this problem impossible to
workaround...
I recently got an iphone and set it up to use my gmail account ("my
gmail"). When I send any type of mail from my iphone, it is sent as
FROM "my gmail" account. Being that the phone is a mobile solution,
when you are out and about of course you will send some information to
yourself. So, I send myself a mail or notification from my iphone and
it's sent TO "my gmail" as FROM "my gmail".
All of these independent emails never went into my gmail INBOX (which
of course meant I never saw them either on gmail web or later when I
use my computer POP access). I could find them in my gmail ALL MAIL
folder or my SENT folder. Needless to say, this totally surprised
me. I figured I could work around the issue by changing the gmail
account I use for my smtp outgoing mail server (so my TO and FROM
would be different), but, unfortunately, the iphone automatically
configures the outgoing smtp information and I can't change it.
This scenario has nothing to do with replies or copies of emails, it's
a simple new email that does not get processed correctly by gmail. I
cannot imagine what gmail developers are thinking! Everyone I know
sends email to themselves for reminders and such. The only reason I
haven't noticed this before is because of the strange way I have my
multiple accounts set up on my computer with POPing, forwarding,
etc. . :)
So, gmail folks, I have no idea why tons of users haven't screamed
about this unacceptable gmail behavior and caused you to fix it.
With the addition of the mobile users, you should hear even more
screaming, as they can't even workaround the problem (witness the
iphone example). Yikes! I am now looking for another email solution
- this is just unacceptable!

with tech support about this, not knowing the problem is with gmail.
The messages are in sent mail, but not anyplace else.

works fine.
Maybe these details will help someone at Gmail solve the problem.

I clicked on 'reply'...wondering if this is going to the whole group
or just this author. Some information on how to use the group format
would be helpful. Now, with regard to sending messages to myself...the
problem I have is that any message I initiate on my computer that is
from me to me does in fact show up in my gmail inbox, but it doesn't
show up in Thunderbird unless I 'forward' it to myself. I don't use
the gmail inbox, because frankly, it's too confusing -- all those
wonderful features when all I want to do is send and receive a few
messages between friends. So I depend on getting my mail through
Thunderbird, all of which comes through fine unless, as I say, it's
from my address to my address. Looking for the messages days later in
all the stuff gmail saves in that inbox is a pain, when I even
remember to do it. Is there some filter on or something that I'm not
aware that I've set? I can't find anything anywhere on this issue.

That is how the Gmail POP server works, Messages you send to yourself
through the SMTP server are not downloaded through POP, but messages
you send from the web interface are.
(BTW, if you set your Gmail POP settings to archive messages after
they are downloaded, it will keep your Inbox clean, without losing any
messages on the server.)

Yes, I would like to put myself in the ring as saying I hate this
"feature".
I manage a list and one way I know it's working correctly is to have
my e-mails come back to me with the subject line appended and I can
see things are working. now there is no way. I contacted my hosting
company to find out why their server was broken and found out it was
gmail.
I've got the same or a similar problem. I have two ISP accounts, one
for personal and one for business mail. When I send personal mail
from home using SMTP, I want a copy to go to my office ISP account so
I can archive the threads there (and also in the opposite direction --
when sending office mail from the office, I want a copy to go to my
personal account).
I had been using the "forward all mail" feature, but that resulted in
duplicate messages coming back to the same computer. So I tried to
use Gmail's filters as follows: any mail not "from" my personal
address would go to my personal ISP (which works) and any mail "from"
my personal address would go to the office ISP. That part doesn't
work. The filter screens show up and select the emails correctly, but
apparently when I send emails using SMTP, they go straight to the Sent
Mail folder and are NOT forwarded.
I've tried modifying the filter so that it applies to messages "from"
both my ISP address and my Gmail address, but that hasn't changed
anything.
There doesn't seem to be a way to avoid this. Can't Gmail make this
feature work -- or else advise me that the filter I'm trying to set up
won't work?
