Unfortunately jonnygozy's workaround is not working for me on my
MacBook Core Duo running 10.4.11. Yes, I did quit and restarted the
app., sent an e-mail to myself and waited and waited and waited until
I did a manual check. I set it for two minutes (typed in 2 in the
value box. Did I do that right?). Right now it's up to 9 mins. before
it auto checks. Also, the mail received icon (icon turns red with
number of mails received) doesn't go off until it auto checks. I
remember it going off if the mail is read, but it doesn't do it
anymore. Sigh....
I'm going to try the workaround again and if it still doesn't work,
try going back to the previous version, if it's still available at the
link John222 posted.
I thought it worked but I was mistaken. Didn't work on my PowerBook.
Also reinstalled older version and now all seems to be well again.
Mine was suddenly only checking every 10 minutes, which is fairly
useless.
Aaaaaaand... mistaken again. Reinstalling the old version appeared to
have fixed the problem, but after an hour or two, it's now back to
checking whenever it pleases. Right now it's at 8 minutes, and I'm
sure it won't stop there.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. However, for
the past week or so mine only checks every 35-56 minutes unless I do
it manually. Key/value fix mentioned below has not helped.

Just noticed that the older version I downloaded and installed
(1.10.2, dmg still on my desktop) updated itself to 1.10.4. App in
apps folder now reads Oct 21, when it read July when I reinstalled it
earlier.

I think I've fixed that... delete the app called "Google Updater."
Then reinstall the previous version from scratch again. I did that
about an hour ago, and the previous one remains unchanged. So far...
I know, right? LOL. But I'm glad it worked out for you. I'm still fine
here after two and a bit hours... still have the working version, and
it's checking mail every minute. Yay!
I must remember to turn off the pooter tonight or the long arm of
Google will snake out of the screen and bash me on my head, screaming
"Update!, Update!" :)

I had tossed (but saved a zipped copy) the original Google Updater in
the Applications folder. Reinstalled the previous version and
everything worked fine.
Now I find that it's been updated again to 1.10.4.
A spotlight search found another "Google Updater" in the
Library>Google folder. I think this can be tossed. Hopefully it's the
culprit.
In the Home folder is yet another Google folder, Inside is a folder
"GoogleSoftwareUpdate". I'm not sure what can be tossed in this folder
or what the files inside do. I suppose since it theoretically
"updates" apps., it too can be tossed. It might be safe to zip it then
toss the original to be safe.

I just tossed the Updater in the Library>Google folder (but kept a
zipped copy in the same location). Spotlight can find no Google
Updater app. now except for the zipped files.
I've reinstalled 1.10.2 again, let's see what happens.
I have the same problem. I use a MacBook and the last week or two, my
gmail notifier almost never checks for new mail anymore, unless I
manually do it. I tried the trick listed below, but I couldn't get it
to work for me. Is there a solution gmail has told us about yet to
fix this notifier delay problem?
Yes, I've done that just as the original poster of that workaround
wrote. I've found that only entering "1" (without the quotes) in the
"Value" box works. Notifier would then autocheck at around 3 mins. It
seems to vary in my case and I cannot figure out why. The shortest
interval has been just over 2 mins., the longest about 4 mins., but
often around 3 mins., it's inconsistent. When I entered "2", the
autocheck interval went as long as 6 mins.
Going back to the previous version of Notifier works best, but despite
tracking down the two copies of Google Updater and deleting them,
Notifier still updates itself to 1.10.4 after a few hours. That is the
cause of the teeth gnashing because all was fine with the previous
version 1.10.2.
Sorry for the problems everyone is having with my posted workaround.
I'm not sure why it seems to work for some and not others, but I can
tell you that it is still checking every minute for me and I'm on
version 1.10.4.676. Hopefully now that Google is aware of the problem
we should have a fix for everybody soon.

Yes, I trashed that preferences file too. I also have Little Snitch
and have set it to prevent any Google updater that might still be
hiding somewhere from making a connection. I reverted to Notifier
1.10.2 last night and it is still 1.10.2 as of now, fingers crossed.
Jonnygozy, thanks for your workaround. It does work, sort of, but I'm
stumped about why it works better on different computers. Still, it
does work for me if I set the Value to 1, just at a longer interval
than in previous versions of Notifier.

MIne just tried to update a few minutes ago, but Little Snitch sent up
an alert to deny or accept. It was from "GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent".
I'm still on 1.10.2 with fingers crossed.
queensny, don't despair. Did you try Jonnygozy's workaround and
setting 1 in the value box? It does cut down the autocheck to a more
acceptable interval.
