My Gmail Notifier for Mac updated itself last night, and since then it
has been checking mail every 5 minutes, instead of about every 1
minute like before. Is there a way to change this back? I don't want
to potentially wait 5x as long for the thing to tell me that I have
mail.

With the mac version, you can't change the interval.
I've got the same problem...but it only seems to not work properly on
my MBP, on my iMac, it works like before.
Latest version.

This happened to me on my MacBook as well. Since the update
installed, I've seen "Checked [4, 6, even 8] min ago". What annoys me
is that I'm used to getting a notification, checking the new email,
and the notification goes away in the next 60 seconds. If the
notification displays for up to 8 minutes, I keep thinking there's a
new email since the one I've read. Hopefully Gmail resets it back to
the original, or adds an "minutes between checks setting" to the Mac
which PC's apparently already have.

Glad I'm not the only one this is happening to. I have been looking
all over the place for a "minutes between checks" type setting, but to
no avail. No luck...I even looked at downloading other programs as a
replacement

I'm getting the same thing. I'm running the latest version
(1.10.4.676) on my MacBook. It gets to 5 minutes until I manually
check. That's not right . . the whole point of this is so that you
don't have to check it.
Hey Goog-masters, any answer on this?

I too am having the same problem on my MacBook. The notifer used to
check every 1-2 minutes, but now after the update it is checking every
5-8 minutes or so. It is really annoying and I hope it gets fixed.

I'll add a "me too" here. They seem to have introduced a bug in the
latest version of Google Notifier for the Mac. I have it installed on
a Macbook, and I'm not sure it ever checks at all unless I select
Check Now. There doesn't seem to be any related setting to fiddle
with.

Yeah mine was taking for ever to check too on my mac. So I downloaded
the older version and it is working perfectly. The site is
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19272
My MacBook just recently started doing the same thing.
I have the latest version (1.10.4.676) installed on both my Black
MacBook and Aluminum iMac. The iMac works fine and checks every 1
minute as usual. The MacBook checks does not check on a regular basis
and sometimes goes 4, 5, 6, 7, up 8 minutes between checks.
I deleted the application and all its traces from my user library
folder, application support, preferences, etc and then reinstalled.
Again, same problem.
I agree with many of you... the point of Google notifier is so that
the user does not have to check manually.

This is a discussion group. A Gmail Guide (an employee of Google) may
step in if they find it is necessary. Otherwise, you are getting
support from those who use Gmail the same way you use Gmail.
I'm having the same problem on my MacBook. I downloaded the older
version John222 linked to and that one checks every 1-2min. The new
version checks every 8-9min for me. I tried to email Google, I'll let
everyone know if I find anything out.

I'm experiencing this issue too, but I made a different assumption
from the rest of you (after I had finished my troubleshooting). I'm
wondering if this is a feature, not a bug.
Among those who report variable intervals between checks, can you
think of anything at all that changes along with those intervals?
Things to think of would be having gmail open in a browser window,
having notifier open and active on multiple computers, receiving
emails less or more frequently, etc.
When I noticed that my notifier wasn't checking every minute like
before, I assumed something was wrong and went through some simple
troubleshooting steps. After I exhausted the limits of my creativity,
I concluded that it is probably not an issue with my installation. At
this point, I'm leaning toward an intentional (unannounced) change.
When you add an IMAP account to your gmail, the interval at which it
checks that account can vary from every few minutes to every day,
depending on how frequently it encounters new messages. It determines
this automatically and you cannot change it (which was why I set my
other email accounts up to forward to me instead). If the amount of
use or the frequency of receipt of messages (or anything quantifiable
and consistent) affects the interval, that would be a good argument
for saying that we're dealing with a silent feature release. If we
can't correlate it, maybe it is a "bug" that hasn't been properly
acknowledged.

I think I've figure out a solution for this problem. If you click on
the mail icon, then hold down command and option keys while clicking
on preferences in the drop down box, you will be prompted with a box
that has a key and value prompt. Type "AutocheckInterval" under key
(this seems to be case-sensitive) and then under value type in the
number in minutes of how often you want it checked. You will need to
quit out of the notifier (again found in the drop down box under the
mail icon) and then run the app again for your change to take effect.
I typed in 1 and it is checking every minute or so now for me. I hope
this works for everyone else too.

I just did this myself, and it seems to have fixed the problem.
To confirm, I sent myself a test email. About one minute later, I got
a new mail notification and deleted the email. One minute after that,
the notifier went away (no new mail).

:-D Gotta love these little 'Easter Eggs'. Only two keys and a
click? Sometimes you gotta stand on your head during a full moon to
get to these gems.
Even though I stated previously that mine remained at a couple
minutes, mine eventually also changes from those 'couple of minutes'
to more. Thanks for the tip. It does seem to work nicely.

Yeah, I found a post about how to edit some other notifier settings
(use https and something else) and that's where I figured out the 2
keys + click thing. Then I had to dig around in the .app contents to
find the name of the variable for the interval, as I had hoped it was
in there somewhere. You can actually edit a .plist file inside
the .app file to add the variable name and value, but this way is
much, much easier. I'm not sure why this isn't in the preferences area
along with the few other settings you can change, but I guess they're
going for a clean look or something.
