I take it you've not done much web programming! Google don't send the
same web app for GMail to Safari as they do to Firefox. It may be
something that Apple have done which breaks GMail, but that might have
been a bugfix which Google were previously working around, and which
Google now need to incorporate into their Safari code.
My Mac is running OS X 10.5.6 and Safari 3.1.2. Only today did it
start with the problem of not being able to connect/send chat or e-
mail. I sent my e-mail using Firefox 2.0.0.20, the final update to
Firefox 2. I quit Gmail. When I attempted to connect using my
bookmark, I saw nothing but the Bad Request - Error 400 that everyone
else has reported. All of this sounds as though BOTH Apple and Google
need to work TOGETHER to resolve this problem.
So why do I have 154 Gmail cookies in my Safari preferences?

Curious thing is that Google Groups is (apparently) unaffected by this
OS X 10.5.6-Safari-GoogleMail conflict.
Also curious is that nothing had been written in MacFixIt about this
problem.
Additionally, I would appreciate having someone who KNOWS to tell me
what effect deleting those 154 cookies would have on my use of the
internet.

Taking Kuperman's cue, I went into the Safari Preferences and deleted
all the GMAIL_STAT_##### cookies and that seemed to work for me. That
was the only thing I did. Note that I'm using Safari 3.2.1 and I've
been getting the 400 error with gmail for a couple of weeks. No
errors with calendar or other google products.

Following up, after having experienced this a number of times over the
course of a couple of days, it ceased for a few weeks. I just now had
it reoccur, but this time it was my Apps for EDU account that was
affected, not my normal GMail account.
To test the possibility that it was based on what Google was sending
to Mac browsers, I used the "Develop" menu to change the user-agent
string to various others from IE6, to FFox2, and iPhone all with the
no change.
I then began deleting individual GMAIL_STAT_#### cookies with no
change, but as there were about 100 of them, I started deleting blocks
of them. Once I got about 2/3 the way through, a reload of the page
brought up the normal interface (well, actually the iPhone one since I
hadn't reset the user-agent) and it deleted the rest of the cookies.
I've not been able to look to see if those cookies are being set by a
client script or if it is server side, but it does seem to be cookie
related.
Has anyone not had this go away after simply deleting all
GMAIL_STAT_##### cookies and doing a page reload?

Hello all. I just joined this group because I am also having the same
problem - error message 400, both when I try to use my Google
notifier, as well as when I try to access googlemail.com. I can only
access it thru google.com and then by clicking on the gmail link...
People laugh at me for keeping my AOhelL account, but one of the
reasons I do is so that when I have a problem, I can talk to a human
about it! I have read about Gmail's non help and it's a drag. And
no, I don't think they're listening....
I'll try what was suggested in prior posts, and hopefully that will
work for me. My problem just started a few days ago.
I don't know what to say.
The problem appeared about a month ago, then it went away during the
last 10 days, and today, once again, the same problem, multiple times
per day!
As far as my usage on my mac, it hasn't changed much during that
period of time.
So, why did the problem disappear at some point, and then came back
again after DAYS had passed?
The last 3 updates on my mac are:
12/16/08: Mac OS X Update 10.5.6
1/21/09: Quicktime 7.6
1/27/09: iLife Media Browser Update 2.0
How can Quicktime and iLife be responsible for that change? :o
I hope this is resolved soon, because it is sooooo irritating.
I just wonder, doesn't anybody on the google-team use safari+gmail (I
also have the gmail notifier and I use it a lot to access my account).
Aren't these guys irritated?
Brand new Mac here, just a few days old. It worked fine until
yesterday and then blew up like all have mentioned. Odd thing is that
it only blew up on one of the two G-Apps domains I have.

Well, it works if you clear out the cookies that have to do with
Gmail, but you must do that each time! Not very practical. Does
anyone have a fix for this problem?
I am also having this problem. It started a few days ago for me. Has
anyone found a solution that works for more than a couple of log-ins?
I know one person suggested updating safari, has this worked?
> Well, it works if you clear out the cookies that have to do withGmail, but you must do that each time! Not very practical. Does

Mine just started yesterday on Safari 3.1.2, PithHelmet 2.8.3 (82), OS
10.5.6. The removing all the mail.google.com cookies trick works for
a little while. Other postings in this group mentioned something
about updates causing the problem. I personally don't think so - I
have been working on a big project for the last 8 weeks and
*purposefully* I have NOT done any updates.
Since I have not had an update and I've been running the combination
everyone seems to be having the for a long time (since Safari 3.3 came
out and had crashing issues with this version of PithHelmet) I have a
hard time imagining that the versions are the problem. I would also
guess that Google has not changed their code at random times at all of
the various time that people have stated the occurrence of the issue.
That suggests that the problem is environmental.
Has anyone tried a fix-permissions lately? I know I am overdue...

It's now Feb 14.
I am using Firefox on an XP machine.
I just started getting this error message: "400 Bad Request: Your
client
has issued a malformed or illegal request."
I have this problem if I try to log into my gmail account the normal
way.
I also have a second gmail account that I access via g-notifier. That
works fine.
The regular Google access, using my primary account and password, does
cause
this error.
I have read all the advices above about clearing private cookies, and
I didn't see any
that came back and said it fixed the problem -- but some did say it
caused other problems.
Maybe their is a particular thing that needs to be deleted, but not
all.
Does anyone have any ideas.
Thanks

I don't see anyone having suggested this yet. You might try disabling
your Firebox extensions, one at a time and see if that helps. Clear
cookies and cache, and restart the browser in-between each try. I
strongly suspect that an extension is causing your troubles.

I tried the normal maintenance - and repaired permissions. I didn't
see anything in the list specific to Safari but, surprising, gmail
behaved itself for a while. I'd left myself logged in for a few hours
without activity and then went to compose a new mail and got the
"Trying... retry in X seconds" message at the top of the screen -
dead in the water.
So... that's not it... add some other posters FF/Mac FF/XP issues and
it really makes you think about what gmail is doing under the hood.
TIP: For Mac/Safari users, if you have PithHelmet you have a quick
work-around. While getting the Bad request error on gmail, click on
the PithHelmet menu->Cookies->Purge Cookies for mail.google.com OR
just <shift><option><cmd>C. Refresh the page and sign in again.

OK GUYS -- THIS MAY WORK FOR YOU, IT WORKED FOR ME!
I tried all the fixes mentioned in all the prior recommendations --AND
I MEAN EVERYTHING!
I even reinstalled Firefox, but that didn't work either.
THIS IS WHAT DID WORK.
I accessed the Internet via Internet Explorer. Then I went to www.gmail.com.
That pulled up my account and I could see all the emails I had been
blocked from seeing because of ERROR 400.
THEN, I exited out of IE and tried to go into my account the way I
always use to do -- and IT WORKED.
I don't know what else to say. If it happens again, I'll try again
what worked this time.
What I do know is that it was a Gmail issue, and it was only on the
one computer. Maybe going through IE reset something on my computer
that had gotten messed up.
GOOD LUCK TO YA ALL!

I had this same problem start late Saturday night on my home cpu, and
also on my work cpu when I logged on today. I'm running the latest
version of FireFox. I tried clearing all my private data and it was
only a temporary fix. So I then disabled the Better Gmail and Gmail
Manager add-ons, and voila. Problem fixed. No longer need to clear my
private data to load gmail. Works like a charm now. I'm 99% sure it
was the Gmail Manager add-on that was causing the problem.

Apparently Google is aware of this problem and is recommending people
on Macs not to use Safari to access gmail at the present. I have
still not been able to fix it in Safari without deleting the cookies
for gmail every time I use the notifier.
Clearing google.com cookies (only, not cache or anything else) makes
the problem go away for a few hours.
I am using https.
I am completely up-to-date on OS X Software Update.
Anyone got any advice for me? I found a lot of noise about this in
December and January but it seems to have gone a bit quieter. Did it
suddenly start working again for you guys?

With me, the problem was with Gmail only, and only for one (!) of my
(several) GFYD's.
For me, this sadly did not fix the problem at all. I did notice that
before changing these settings, neither of the the radio-buttons was
selected. But after selecting one and saving, my sessions were still
being disrupted.
Mine finally went away... at least for now. the only technical thing
i did to my computer before it started working again was actually
shutting it down. I wouldn't expect that this is what did it... more
of a coincidence, but i haven't seen the ERROR 400 since (and that was
a little over a week ago) So we'll see. if it comes back then i
guess i'll be back to trying your suggestions. hope it all gets
cleared up soon

YES, EVERYONE HAS THIS PROBLEM. BUT I DON'T WANT TO READ SEVEN PAGES
OF EVERYONE COMPLAINING. I AM LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION. SO PLEASE POST
ONLY IF YOU HAVE A SOLUTION. IF NOT, STOP COMPLAINING.
What I know so far is that Safari users are having this problem and
that resetting the browser by clicking on Safari, Reset Safari and
making sure that "Remove all Cookies", and "Empty the Cache" are
checked fixes it... TEMPORARILY. Using only my mail application and
not using safari seems to be a fix, but I (as well as everyone) would
like to be able to access their email the regular way. If you know how
to fix this issue, please help. If not, please don't crowd this forum
with excessive unhelpful complaining.... I hope this message does not
cause others to bitch even more....
