Add me as another data point. Same problem here. Safari 3.2.1 and Mac
OS 10.5.6. Gmail's busted.
I use gmail constantly, but just about an hour ago, all of a sudden I
can't send (error #6411), then I try to discard ("Can't Connect to
Gmail"), then I try to Sign out ("Bad Request"), then I type in
"gmail.com" in the browser ("Bad Request").
I can sign in to other Google services on Safari. Just not Gmail.
So then I bring up Firefox, log in to Gmail, and everything is fine.
Also, Thunderbird is fine as well.
Something must have just changed on Google's side that broke Safari
3.2.1 clients. :(

If you can use Firefox and Thunderbird, Gmail is not broken. Safari
is broken. Safari is an Apple product. This happened when Apple
updated to OS X 10.5.6 - which tells me that APPLE did something to
Safari, not GOOGLE.

I just was prompted to update my Safari. The update seemed to solve
my problem and I am now accessing my Gmail via Safari again. I hope
this keeps working!

I have the same problem: when I try to enter Gmail from iGoogle,
Safari shows me "Bad Request Error 400"
I've tried to update the software but it seems not be any update
available.
How did you update your Safari?

Do not user iGoogle for more than just a quick preview of your Inbox.
There are issues with it and it is not worth dealing with. Always
launch full Gmail if you want to read and reply or compose. Did you
try entering Gmail via the secured HTTP link: https://mail.google.com/mail/
Also, to check for updates, click the Apple icon in the upper left
corner of your screen. If you have the latest OS X and Safari, as
well as other Apple products, no update will be done.
I reset my Safari browser and so far Gmail opens just fine. I will
check from work (Windows XP there) to see if it is just a Mac
interface problem or not.

I've got the same problem. Safari 3.2.1 + Mac OS X 10.5.6
What's wierd is that before new year I had no problems. I just got
back from the beach and now I have problems connecting (Bad Server
Error). When I delete the cookies I can log on but after a while it
starts throwing connection errors.
I find it interesting that when you click on the "report it" button
you get sent to the Help Des where there are no links or ways of
reporting a gmail error So I'm gonna paste it here:
I'm sorry to hear that several of you are hitting this error message,
but there've been some great troubleshooting suggestions on this
thread. As NE1956 pointed out, since the problem seems to have
coincided with an Apple change, it's likely an issue with that update
rather than Gmail or Google.
I'd be interested to know if those of you affected hit this error with
any other Google products. It sounds like iGoogle hasn't been a
problem, but how about something like Google Calendar or Google Docs?
Also, does changing your https setting help? (Don't know what I mean?
See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=74765 for more.)

Thanks for your post, Michelle. The problem seemed to sort itself out
for a few hours yesterday, but it was back again today. I find that
if
I delete the gmail cookies from my Safari browser before trying to
sign into Gmail, I can get in. But once I leave Gmail the problem
resurfaces.
As far as problems with Google Calendar or Google docs, well, none to
report here, and I do use them quite regularly as well.
I have also posted this issue in Apple's Safari forum but have not had
a solution posted yet.

I too keep getting error 400, and w/ auto-update I had no choice - OS
X10.5.6 has been 'done' to me
I agree it's an Apple/Safari problem.
I'm not a tech....so, I'm only interested in a fix - anyone have an
estimate?
Are we all posting on the Apple/Mac forums, or notifying Apple every
way possible?

I've been having the Bad Request problem in Safari off and on for
days, too. Resetting Safari temporarily fixes the problem. For me, the
issue doesn't occur solely at login, either. I'll be using Gmail
normally, and then I'll click on an email to read or hit send on a
draft and first get an error contacting Gmail. The little timer comes
up and resets for increasingly longer periods of time. Eventually that
turns into Bad Request, and there's no way for me to sign in again
until I've reset Safari.
I don't even get a block of error code, and I'm wondering where those
are coming from... I just get a simple HTML error, as follows:

same issue here- how frustrating!!! i'm working off of the safari
3.1.2 browser but am checking for updates to see if any fix the
issue.
in the mean time... i've set up apple's Mail program to read my gmail.
not the best setup since everything transfers into the inbox, even
sent messages, and it's a bit unwieldy to use. but at least i can see
if anybody is trying to contact me.

Looks like it might be a problem with the WebCore Framework (or
WebKit) within the 10.5.6 upgrade. Nothing to do with Gmail or Safari
per se.
See this thread for "more information than you require." ;)
I had same problem- but I went into safari preferences and reset
Safari- checking all but the clear saved passwords and usernames area.
This seemed to work for me.

Same exact problem with our Mac laptop. Bad Request, Error 400 was
originally sporadic and now constant since last night. Someone in a
post mentioned updating iTunes. We did, to the 8.0 about two days ago
- could that be it?

Same exact problem on my Mac laptop today with Safari 3.2.1. Was
working fine until this morning and now all I get is Bad Request Error
400. Works fine on Firefox.
I have made no changes on my Mac in the last few days.

It looks like the problem has reappeared. I updated Safari last week
and I had no problem getting to my Gmail. This morning it still
worked, but now I get the same old error 400 message. I am glad that
I have Firefox as a back-up!

Throughout your web browser use, do you keep cookies and temp files /
cache cleaned up. Like every couple hours or so?
How about, under Security, what is your database size set to be. Mine
is 1MB. I think the default is 5MB. Lower is better as it keeps your
temp files to a minimum.
Under General, how often do you clear History?
Do you use RSS news reading and, if so, how often is it cleared?
Thanks for the suggestions. I clear my history every day or two and
have also cleaned the cache regularly. Last week I reset Safari and
that didn't even help, but doing a prompted update of Safari did
work... until this afternoon. I'll give your suggestions another try
tomorrow.
