Yes, I'm getting it, as well as another friend. It appears to be a
widespread outage.
If you log off, you won't be able to log back in (you'll get error
502). I logged out, waited a few minutes, signed back in, then after
reading one more message, the error #796 returned, and I was stuck
again.
I've been using Gmail many years; this is the first time I've seen an
outage like this (or error #796).

Yes, while trying to delete messages, and it keeps increasing the
length of time between retrying. Gmail has been slooooow for the past
couple of days, which is really unusual - I wonder what the heck
they're doing over there.

Same problem had 796 and logged out now have 502 and cannot get in.
Each time 796 came up I would try resend and it came up with a longer
wait time each try.

although the computer browser said message not sent, I still get

Sounds like Gmail is failed the world over after the day long outage
about a week ago.
Even though I like Google, this unavailability rate is getting a bit

Damn! Not again! A couple days ago my GMail was down for like 15
hours with the 502 problem. Now this! I use Gmail for my business
and this is killing me. How long will it go on?
This stinks. I'm trying to deal with some work stuff and got locked
out with a 502 error for the past 2 hours. Then I was able to get in
but saving and / or sending got me the 796 error. I tried the HTML
view and when I went to send I got kicked out and the 502 error. I
hope this gets resolved soon and isn't a major failure.
