When I follow the instructions to change the address to the default
(alternative to my gmail address), the Mail program is unable to check
for mail (as the incoming settings change to the new "non-Gmail"
address, and cannot check.
Is there a solution to this problem for iPhone 2x/iPhone 3G??
=======
I tried logging on in web-view, and the expected "From" opo-up that
shows on a desktop web view, does not displayon the Safari/iPhone web
view.

1. Change the "address" field to your custom address
2. Compose mail, hit send (it won't send because it can't connect)
3. Reset the "address" field to [email address]
4. Log back into mail to activate sending the email
Being that it was written under the custom address, that's how it will
appear in the receiver's inbox.
I know this is very inconvenient, and I'm also very interested in
seeing something more practical.

You need to add a new account as the"other" type rather than gmail.
Then use the desired email address as the account address then your
gmail password. Save then on the next screeen use IMAP.gmail.com and
SMTP.gmail.com with your gmail username and pass for the incomming and
outgoing servers. You must also set up the from address you used in
the first step as an alternative account in gmail
This will then allow you to forward mail from another account to gmail
to use it's great spam filter, then send mail from a different email
address using gmail's SMTP

Much easier: Just configure the GMail-Account not about the "Google
Mail"-Button but trougth the "Other" Button. Then you can configure
imap und SMTP with the normal user settings and use the different
adress as from-adress. It just takes a minute to do so - and works
perfectly.

When I add a new account using a different address but the same Gmail
IMAP info as described above, it's doing something very strange. It
changes all the info on my current account to the new address and then
I essentially have two duplicate accounts. Any changes made to one
affects the other and when I tried deleting the new account that I
setup it removed both accounts. Anyone else seeing this?
