The contacts in my gmail were a bit out of date. I exported them all
to a csv file, then deleted them all. I then attempted to import a csv
created from my Outlook. I get this:
Oops. An unknown error occured while importing your contacts.
Then I tried to import the csv Gmail created. Same error.
I then went a Yahoo account I had. I imported my Outlook CSV there
with no issue. I then Exported all the contacts from yahoo to a CSV.
Back to Gmail, try the import again. Same issue.
I have tried this with multiple files on three different PC's, using
different paths to the internet, behind different firewalls. All with
no success.
I want to start using my Gmail account more, but if I can't import my
contacts it's useless.
Got a work around for you. Guessing that you are using outlook to send
through Gmail in which case send an email to all those you want to
import explaining that you are only doing this to ease moving their
addresses over. When you open Gmail you will find all of the addresses
in Suggested Contacts. If you are not using Outlook this way then
change the default application in it to Gmail temporarily until you
have done it. Just watch you don't exceed the 500 in a day limit.

I am not using Outlook.
I'm using Address Book and A to G to convert/import my contacts into
gmail.'
I've done it once w/out difficulty, but today, it repeatedly will not
cooperate and reponds w/ the same error message.
"Import
Oops. An unknown error occured while importing your contacts."
I'm having the same problem. Here is the wierdness as I've seen it:
1. unable to import into user A account. User A is a google apps
user. Get the "Ooops" error.
2. take the same file and import it to user B account. Works fine.
User B is a gmail user (not google apps)
3. take the same file and import it to user C account. Works fine.
User C is a google apps user in a different organization (completely
unrelated to User A)
4. take the same file and import it to user D account. Works fine.
User D is a google apps user in the SAME organization as User A.
5. Here I was getting creative: Exported the newly imported contacts
in Step 3 to a "google" specific export file. Tried to import that
file to User A. Got the "Oops" error.
So the problem is not the import file because it works 3 out of 4
tests.
It's not Google Apps, because i can bring it into other Google Apps
users.
It's a bug or limitation in User A's setup.
The import file has 451 contacts. He has 412 contacts already in
gmail. We expect that a large portion of the two lists are
duplicates.

In the gmail account you are trying to import your contacts to, go to
the top right portion of your screen and click the button that says
OLDER VERSION. This will give you the older version of gmail. Then,
click on the contacts button. You will be taken to the contacts
screen. Click import. It should work.
Once it all imports and your contacts are there, go back to the top
right and click NEWER VERSION.
I think the bug is just related the the new version in some google
apps accounts. This worked for me. Hope it helps.

I recently purchased a G1, and as a business executive have 5,000+
contacts in my Outlook that i needed to import. Using my blackberry
this was simple, but not so on Googles Contacts. There are lots of
discussions about making sure the fields are correct, etc.. but even
after reading all those, there was still a wierd issue. Sometimes it
would let me import a batch of 1000 contacts from a CSV, sometimes it
would only let me do 10.
The long a short of it is that there is bug. Basically if you 2 email
contacts in Google's suggested contacts that have exactly the same
email address but with a different CAPS setting, so for example
[email address] and [email address] will be stored as 2
different emails. Then when you try to import your CSV file, if it
contains either address it comes back with an Oops. So the only way
around this is to go through your suggested contacts in alpha order -
I had 1500 to go through, and check for any duplicates like this and
delete one of the emails.
Once doing this, I had no issues loading in my 5000+ contact details
via a CSV dos file export from Outlook.
I hope this note helps some other people, as this took me 4 hours to
figure out...and lots of trial and error!
Ashley
PS I guess the other quicker solution would be to delete ALL the
suggested contacts by selecting ALL and then just deleting them.
However, its a useful feature to have those listed I guess.

But now seem to have several hundred duplicates, and the gmail info
was older than my outlook info, but i can;t tell wich is wich without
opening every contact, any one have a better way to remove duplicates
or combine them?

I made a .csv list for importing into contacts. I made a test account
to see if it works. It works fine on the test account, but I get the
following error when I try it on the real account:
"Oops. An unknown error occured while importing your contacts."
This worked perfectly for me, I just deleted the "suggested contacts"
and everything was fine. This was driving me nuts!!! Thanks for he
help.
As an aside, I find it really annoying that they use the email address
as a primary key. I have several contacts that have the same email
address but have different contact information.

I had the same problem. When I try to import my co-worker's contacts
into Gmail, I get the error message. The contacts import fine when I
am using my own Gmail account. Any ideas?

I agree with you that it will overwrite instead of prompting the user
to resolve the conflict.
I have imported the contact list from my wife's gmail account.
She had some entries that I didn't have, yet I have some entries that
have better and newer info.
When I imported her, her old data overwrote my newer values.
Given that kind of blind overwrites, I'll not import again.
It is simply too damaging to make such an assumption with user's data.
Nothing worths such kind of risk.
GMail is a great tool, but this "feature" is an exception that gives
gmail a bad name.

My GMail says "Beta" next to the GMail Logo on the upper left. So it
is understandable that this software is for beta testing purpose and
it is not final. However, I don't see a button on the page that allow
the users to report problems. What good is the beta test if they are
not taking feedback?
If this error occurs when one import the contact list from other apps,
it is easier to accept.
In my case, I exported from my wife's Gmail account and then imported
the same file (without any alternation) into my Gmail account. One
would expect that someone at Google would have "alpha" tested this
feature before releasing it for "beta" testing. This is
disappointing.

New to Firefox and g mail. Couldn't get my contacts from outlook
express till I used the older version and then the import went just
fine. I should have looked here first and saved a lot of time trying
several exports from outlook express, editing, not editing, editing
again....Thanks.

I did the trick (go to the older version) and it imported fine, but it
did not map correctly. It put the Name Field in the Notes Section so
now I get a lot of (unknown), or the test before the @ sign in an
email as the contact name. Am I doing something wrong? thanks

Hi there, I've followed the advices posted and I've solved everything
but one issue.
The thing is it's a large contact list I have to import, and every
contact has several lines on the "notes" field (like when you press
enter while holding tab, and inside a field you make several lines).
So, when exporting to the CSV file, this creates several lines per
contact, and therefor, Gmail takes them as if they were several
different contacts (one for each line).
The problem is I can't replace automatically those "enters" for
"spaces" or any other character, neither Excel, Word, Notepad or other
applications I know take the "enter" as a character in order to find
it and replace it.
