Why is it not letting me to create a label named "IMPORTANT" ???

Some labels are reserved for internal/system use, such as "unread",
"spam", "Trash", and apparently "Important". If you really want a
label like that... try "Important!", or "!Important".

Certain word are reserved for the system. You cannot for example use "chat" or "voicemail" as a label.

Good question! I just tried it and I couldn't do it either.

That's really really strange as I have a label by the name Important, as can be seen in the screen shot attached, but when I try to create the same in this mail ID the "label being Invalid" message shows up, could be a part of the long awaited Gmail Interface upgrade perhaps...

Cheers!

I read somewhere that there will be soon be a to do list feature in  Gcal. Maybe this is part of the long awaited integration between Gmail and Gcal.

You can. Precede the label with a dash and space, i.e., "-
Important". This does two things:
1. It provides the label you want.
2. It puts the label at the top of the list.

It didn't work for me either by just using the word "Important," however,
when you use an apostrophe or comma before the word, such as:  'Important,
or ,Important, it works.

A space before the word doesn't work, however.

If you add another word in front of it - Very Important - it also works.

Something seems amiss.

Something seems, as others have mentioned, like an upgrade is in the
works. I wonder what's going to happen to Vijay's "Important" label
when the upgrade is rolled out?

Well...
I just replaced O with 0(zero) in IMPORTANT to solve the problem :)
Why would gmail reserve words like "important" ?
and why wouldn't people want to use it in their mail? Its a very
common word to be used to label mails ...

it probably has something to do with the todo list coming to google
calendar. i would assume we will be able to mark tasks as important
which is why they are making important a system only label now.

I wonder when Google's going to get around to that tasks feature.
Poking around in the GCal JS shows the same "alert('UNIMPLEMENTED
[function]');" code Garett Rogers found last year...

At least we're learning ways to beat the system.
