I know all about the textile virus.

It is especially virulent this time of the year, when people come in
contact with more textile than is comfortable.
The only cure - temporary - is to avoid all such contact for as long
as possible, preferably in a suitable climate.

Cheers, Myo

Not the intended meaning, I know, but your comment reminded me of the
disease known as CJD -- the human version of mad cow disease -- which
was first identified in tribes that feasted on the brains of their
vanquished enemies, I believe.

Just the type of feasting we had cows doing, for a while there,

A couple of years ago I tried to learn French (I didn't get very far
though). One of the videos I borrowed from the library was made in
France. When the actors flagged down a policeman to ask for
directions, the policeman immediately saluted them, as if to say "I am
your servant". I'd forgotten it was like that.

Me too, reminded of Doyle's - I believe - writing that cops
signaled for colleague support by knocking their club on the pavement.

Ah, the good old days, when there was a policeman around the nearest
corner and didn't need anything more than a trundgeon.
In the late 1950s, the police in Stockholm still carried swords.

In 1999 the office building I worked in was to be sold off. Our office
had been in use as a library and information centre for at least 40
years. One part of the wall was used for maps. We took the maps down
to roll them up and discovered at the very bottom under some wallpaper
an old map of the world at least 60 years old. A large part of it was
