Anyway, hi. I wasn't a researcher nor a commenter nor a customer; just
used to browse through some of the questions for fun. It's laughable
that the media is even comparing Yahoo Answers to Google Answers: it's
not even in the same league.
Do you guys remember hfshaw-ga? I used to enjoy reading his
comments--he was very good (although not a GAR). So I noticed he's on
Yahoo Answers now, and he has a "best answer" percentage of 87%. Which
is a heck of a lot. I don't doubt that most of the former GARs could
achieve similar percentages on Yahoo A. Who would want to is a
different question...
i could have sworn there was a YA thread, and i just wasted some time
looking for it, only to discover you're right; there is no dedicated YA
thread. many people here, however, have made some rather snide
comments about it in other threads, so your opinion is shared.
i've looked at YA a few times now, to see if i can extract any
enjoyment from it at all, maybe just sticking to certain subjects, and
the answer is no. i can only stand it for about 5 minutes before i
can't take all the yelling, idiocy, tackiness, and general boobery. to
tell the truth, i'm not sure how many ex-GAR's would do well there;
answers longer than 2 sentences (and answers that are correct) seem to
get voted down all the time. i;m impressed someone like hfshaw can
survive there, but more power to him if he can. when i'm in a surfing
mood, i'd rather just browse old questions on the remnants of GA. i've
even wasted time recently hitting the "random" button on wikipedia.
but it just ain't even close to the same.
if you're more into surfing thru interesting info than lurking in a
community thing, what's actually pretty cool is digalot-exga's
http://archaeolink.com. i've been poking around in there in the last
week or so, and it has a lot of interesting history-related stuff.
still, not the same.

Well spotted Cab!

The problem starts before that, with the questions even. The limit is
110 characters for the "Question" and 1000 characters for the
"Details".
That would immediately eliminate many of the most interesting and most
worthwhile questions that we had at GA.
Regards,
Roger.
The people there are articulate (not quite GA standard), generally
polite, occasionally recognize each other, and the questions are
serious. Here is a nice example:

Now I will go back and read the rest of the 50 postings.

Do you share my suspicion that Myoarin is somewhat over-enthusiastic in
promoting the Metalfilter site?
'Could it be?' I ask myself.
No perish the thought.

perhaps you should consider choosing "renault" instead of rolls royce?

Such as this from Cab's above comment:

Bryan's posting was at 6:30 pm. 12.30 pm would have been later than
Cab's own posting, but maybe UK time, when he did post, but then what
...? I'd had thunk the system was on one clock, maybe based on the
time zone of person who established the Group. ???

Air Force One (formely Pafalafa-ga) - our Man in Washington - has
previously warned about Time Differences.
As you will recall, Dave (that's a great title for a movie about a
Prez) told us that, in 1999, he spent the New Year's Eve in The White
House trying to teach the Prez how to tell the time so that they could
celebrate the New Millennium ...
QUOTE
Anyway, the Prez had a kind of cheap-looking lighted panel that counted
down the time remaining in smallish numbers, and in large numbers it
showed......1999
The Prez and I counted off the last ten seconds, and when the magic
moment came, some software program added one to the '1999', so that the
display now read......19991
So, the clock was only off by some 17,000 years or so.
But, of course, the Prez never noticed.

Hope that this helps.
