Welcome to a chat list with a difference!

Friends without forwards, chat without chain mail! Come and make friends, get in touch with old friends, invite friends, share the chit-chat, your life experiences, sound files, midis, recipes, your own writing, information, some stationery and fun and interesting sites that are not trying to be widely circulated via email and web forum fwd; anything but chain mail or ecard type sweet nothing sites.

It is not a typical "penpal/email pal" list to be used as a matching point and then stop participating in the community in favor of emailing one another offlist. It is definitely not a flirting or dating service pickup joint either.

This is an email community.

It's meant for posting and getting emails in a growing community of fun and friendship where everyone can pitch into any conversation, discussion, chit-chat by email. And all without the possibly troublesome flirty nonsense and chain mail that's cluttering up cyberspace and breaking down communication everywhere else.

Unlike "penpal" lists, there are no questionaires to fill out and submit for membership approval, databases or posting of formal introductions explaining your stats. Posts "looking for email/snailmail/penpals" won't be accepted because this place is not about fish, match/connect and go privately on your way. The way this works is we'll find out more about one another as we go along.

This list isn't "about" any one topic. The more chatter the better. "Butting in" is not a bad thing here, so don't be shy. Jump in and post.

You may post by sending email to FriendsWithoutForwards@googlegroups.com or clicking the "Discussions" or "Messages" link above. That link will allow you to view and read past topics and messages as well. You may create web pages, and download and upload files in their respective links.

If you have questions about such things as how to change your subscription settings or how to contact a group owner etc. the following link from the Google groups help page has some basics.

If you'd like to go beyond email, there are also voice conference chat sites.

These sites are for anyone, not only the visually impaired to enjoy voice chat. They have been optumized for easy accessibility for the visually impaired, and there are many people already using them who have sight problems. But all are welcome, sighted or not.)

Friends Without Forwards Community Rules:

1. No trolling/flaming or bullying, on or off this group.

2. No flirting, especially with the list managers, and no mistaking any kidding around for such.

3. please do not join to fish for private pen pals, or take chatter that started on the list to private email or encourage people to email you off the list. The whole idea of this list is what the description says, not to pair off into private email, which undermines this community by decreasing its activity level and excluding other list members from chipping in on the community fun. There isn't a rule against members privately emailing one another as such, but the rule is against using the list as a fishing ground for private penpals.

4. No spamming. Besides the obvious spam, posting nothing but ads for other groups and sites, yours or not, will be treated as spam. Well established, contributing members to the chat posts may eventually promote their own groups and sites provided they are personal, non-commercial and not offensive. New members may not begin with posts that just advertise and promote something. Please remember this is a list for chatting as well as sharing sites that interest you, and other things that are not already being forwarded all over the internet, so please don't post exclusively links to incredi "Goodies" type sites. Some are fine as long as they are not circulating on the net as chain email and are from your own personal collection of favorites, but if stats, tubes, graphics and links are all you post, that isn't exactly communication and interaction, is it? Too many of these, especially if they're the only thing you post as a new member will be treated as spam. Also, if it is discovered you've been posting urls to sites that are already being forwarded far and wide elsewhere, it will be treated as chain email and spam. So please put some effort and thought, into the things you want to share, because this list won't contribute to mass-production of the very same things found all over other groups and web forums.

For this reason, please be careful of sites that use the "Send to a friend" "Tell a friend" feature, where you enter friends' emails and they get a copy or a link to the site you just visited. Some are legit, being real news and information sites, but others are basically e-card-like with things you typically get in fwds. Some of these are even harmful in that they use bait such as funny pictures etc to lure you in, and by clicking on the "Tell a friend" you're submitting your address to receive junkmail, and submitting addresses of your friends as well.

5. No chain mail fwds of any stripe - and if you're not familiar with the signs of chain email or are relatively new to the internet, chances are you have or will receive and pass it on. You'd be surprised to find out how many different forms chain letters take.

6. No arguing in defense of passing on chain email forwards. "I know it was a chain letter, but the message was soooooo good!" or "What's the harm in passing it on? It's how I spread friendship all over the world!" Uh, no...The way to do that is to write your own emails, not passing on some sickly sweet glurge, stale joke, friendship poem, wish-granting good luck letter that tells you to delete it if you don't have a heart and forward it if you love Jesus and has been around the net and back ten million times.

7. Non-chainmail forwards are definitely allowed. They would be personal emails you wrote to someone and decided to post here, emails you know your friend/relation or fellow list member from another list actually wrote, a personal picture such as one your family has of a new baby that you want to share, or sound file you got from someone and like, etc. Recipes and some stationery you got from other email lists are welcome as long as they are not mass-produced and circulating on the net, these personally printed out and written emails are not chain mail. Joke fwds, glurges, "fun" "goodies" type sites being circulated elsewhere, and Anything that tells or compells you to "pass it on" is. Please see http://www.snopes.com http://www.breakthechain.org and http://www.truthorfiction.com for more information about chain email forwards.

8. When sending something from another list to this one, please be sure whatever you are sending was written by someone on that other list and is not just a copy of something they got from a friend of a friend and is not being Cced all over who knows where..

9. Please be careful with posting items from news sites and special interest stories you got from other lists. The occasional news item is fine, but if they equal or outnumber posts you actually write, people tend to read or delete without replying, and no one wants to read only exclusively one subject or special interest as surely you don't talk about only one thing constantly.

10. Posts with "Recipient-list suppressed" "Undisclosed-Recipient" or many email addresses seen in the To: Cc: field or message body are discouraged and might not be accepted. They indicate a possible chain letter or remote query or item more for those in your special interest topic lists or a select group of your personal contacts. Therefore, if you are already emailing it to many addresses, unless it is really important, of enough interest to this list generally, or momentus and personally involves you, it probably doesn't need to be posted here as well.

11. No complaining about the amount of postings. Too many emails for you? Switch to no mail or digest. Too little email? You can fix that by emailing the group to get things going. It's natural for groups to be active and then experience lulls and become active again.

12. Have fun!
