When I went through the temple programme it was Phra Hans who inspired
me. His words on that first day provided the answers to all my
questions surrounding my addictive behaviour and offered a way out of
the mess my life had become. It is his words which still inspire me
today. He said things which nobody had said to me before but which
immediately made sense.
I remember when he came to teach us meditation in the temple. I had
been interested in Buddhism since my teens and approached his
meditation lesson with a bit of arrogance. What could he teach me
about Buddhism? I was way too advanced for beginners meditation. His
lesson though proved me a fool. He put things in a way that was new
and so helpful. He knew his stuff because he practised what he
preached.
I went to the temple last week to mark my third sober year. I heard
that he was very sick, but didn't think that he was so near the end. I
had my wife and son with me and felt in a rush. I didn't go to his
room and say good-bye and more importantly say thank-you. I feel sorry
about this.
I would like to think that Phra Hans will receive some reward for all
his good work after death. I know that he will remain alive in my
recovery, and I'm sure many other people's as well.
