Veteran Swan to call it quits

21jun06

Veteran midfielder and two-time Sydney best and fairest winner Paul
Williams today announced he would retire from the AFL at the end of the
season.

Williams, 33, who has a made a total of 303 AFLappearances with
Collingwood and Sydney, made his decision yesterday after talks with
his family.

``There's a few family reasons as well as footy,'' Williams said today.

While he believed he could have possibly played another season,
Williams felt he may not have been able to play to the same high level
as in the past.

Renowned for his speed, Williams played 189 games forCollingwood
between 1991 and 2000, before moving to Sydney.

He won the Swans' best and fairest award in his first two seasons and
picked up a premiership medal in his 294th AFL game.

An All-Australian representative in 2003, Williams was drafted by
Collingwood with the 70th pick of the 1989 national AFL draft.

He needs to play just five more games to make the most VFL-AFL
appearances ever logged by a Tasmanian, exceeding the tally set by
former Fitzroy and Brisbane champion Alastair Lynch.

A modest Williams pointed out Lynch, who is a close friend and former
team-mate of Sydney coach Paul Roos, would have made many appearances
had it not been for his battle with chronic fatigue syndrome.

``I think he (Williams) has been an exemplary member of the footy club,
but more importantly I suppose is the way he's represented the AFL over
300 games, he's been an outstanding ambassador for the game,'' Roos
said.

Williams, who will return to Melbourne at the end of the season, said
he hoped to remain involved in the game in some capacity.

This is the first time I have seen a sports related news event that has
carried with it undertones of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome. It tells me that our awareness efforts are working and we are
advancing knowledge about these health crisis.
