I had this problem with the release candidates for Firefox 2.0, and I now have it with the release version. I originally chalked it up to a Firefox bug, but after disabling all my add-ins, the problem went away. By process of elimination, I have determined that the Google toolbar randomly hangs Firefox 2.0. There is no apparent pattern to the lockups, and I can't define a set of actions that explicitly cause the lock up. When the toolbar is enabled, about 2-3 times a day, Firefox just stops responding. Clicking anywhere in the window causes '(Not Responding)' to appear in the title bar and the application icon changes to the generic application logo. Clicking the X button prings up the end program dialog and the Send Error to Microsoft Dialog. I am at a loss as to how to troubleshoot further.

This could be vaguely related to the problem under "... grey bar at top..." with 24 messages in this group. Out of interest, try enabling your toolbar and turning off all the advanced features of the toolbar, ie all features on browsing tab, suggest queries on the search tab. I've found that this has stopped my error occurring, could be worth a look for you too.
I've just upgraded to Firefox 2.0 on my intel mac (MacBook) and firefox constantly hangs. From other forums I figured out that uninstalling Google Toolbar solves the problem. Does anyone know if there's a way to play around with settings to be able to use both the google toolbar and Firefox 2.0? I really miss my Google toolbar, but I don't want to have to switch browsers or revert to Firefox 1.5 while this issue gets resolved. Anyone know what's causing it?

VPech, The problem on Intel Mac is caused by a bug in Firefox: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353962 Something in the toolbar seems to aggravate the bug; it might have to do with opening new Windows in Firefox. Hopefully there will be a fix in Firefox 2.0.1.

I have the same problem. It is not with a MAC but with an Intel PC. I reported it to firefox and they rejected the bug and said I should report it to Google. How do I do that?

Thanks for reporting the issue! We're investigating this one -- in the meantime, you should be able to minimize this problem by disabling PageRank. To do this, go to "Options" > "Browsing" tab, then uncheck the "PageRank" check box.
Same problem. FF 1.5 worked fine and I upgraded to 2.0. Only Plug In I have is the Google Toolbar version mentioned above. About 40% of the time, FF hangs when I try to launch it. Nothing happens on my 3-month-old XP laptop. I have to ctrl+alt+dlt to the task manager and "end process" firefox, then re-launch it. After the author over at Google Blogoscoped complained about it [http://blog.outer-court.com/forum/77266.html] I read through some of the replies and some people suggested disabling the Google Toolbar. I did just that and it has not hung once since disabling it. Two things to note: I did a complete uninstall, profile deletion, re-install of FF 2.0 and re-install of the Google Toolbar and it did not resolve anything. I also have NEVER had page rank enabled in the Google Toolbar ever... so Page Rank is not it, or at least not it alone. Not sure what other features might be considered "advanced" that could be doing it. Also, about 5% of the time FF launches to the extent of putting up the shell of the browser, but then it hangs, so i have a big white screen with the gray border around it. Still, that's rare. As far as the problems other people mentioned about FF hanging or crashing once it is open... I have not once had that happen to me. It is only when launching FF.
As with another reply, I just installed the toolbar for the first time 12/3/2006 7:45pm PST and immediately turned disabled Page Rank and all other functions that communicated back to Google. FF stopped responding once when I tried to discover how the "blog post this" button worked, and again when I was turning off the options.
Most concerning is the main reason I installed the toolbar was for Autofill, which used to be an Extension under FF pre 2.0 and now is only available in the Google Toolbar for FF2.0. Each time that FF hung, when I restarted it all the data I entered for Autofill was gone! And I had successfully updated the Autofill info and closed the Option function thinking my data was now safely held somewhere. Evidently not.
OK, so I updated the Autofill info, then restarted FF in the hope that may somehow would permanently save the information (where is it kept, anyhow?). I'll let you know when it hangs again.
So, bottom line, No one has a clue as to why the Google Toolbar causes FF2.0 to hang? Just for the record, I have been on FF 2.0 since October 25, 2006 and it has never hung until the Google Toolbar install.

I am running Windows XP SP2, IE 6 and Firefox 2. Google Toolbar and IE function correctly. However, I have been forced to uninstall the Google Toolbar for Firefox as it kept causing Firefox to freeze (hang). Since removing the Toolbar from Firefox it has been stable. I am looking forward to the fix. Hope it comes soon...
I'm running Firefox 2.0 on Windows XP SP2 and I had the same problems with Google Toolbar version 2.1.20060807W causing FF2 to hang or freeze up. Disabling Google Toolbar fixed this problem and it was smooth sailing for a long time.
Now that Toolbar 3 Beta (3.0.20061204W beta) came out I gave that a try - at first it was okay for about a day but now I'm getting frequent hangs again. As with 2.1.20060807W, there's a common symptom - when you bring up the Task Manager to end the firefox.exe process, under the "Applications" tab you'll see duplicate Firefox applications when really only one window is open. This same thing happens in the 3.0 beta so I'm led to believe it's the same problem. After disabling the toolbar 3.0 beta I've had no freezes thus far.
Also I should note the only feature I'm using is PageRank. I have every other option disabled, in fact I have the full toolbar disabled as well - I only use the PageRank icon which I added using Firefox's Customize Toolbar options.
I have downloaded and installed the Google Toolbar 3 Beta. Unfortunately, the same problem still occurs (causes Firefox to hang (freeze)). However, not as frequently. Well, it doesn't seem so. I haven't at this stage disabled or uninstalled the Toolbar 3 Beta. I just hope this can be resolved.
As per a previous post, when I open task manager I see 2 Firefox applications not responding, but in fact there is only one
I have given in and uninstalled the Google Toolbar 3 Beta. Whilst, I think this beta release didn't cause Firefox to hang (freeze) as often as the previous version it still happens too often to continue using it.
There is new Firefox version 2.0.0.1 available to download, but bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353962 is not fixed yet. We need wait for new Firefox version with fix in revision mozilla1.9.
