Wanted to start a topic forum that would open up options for vintage
art supply collectors to, trade, buy/sell, and discuss the history of
vintage art supplies. I would like to start by giving a short history
on the elusive Blaisdell Charcoal Pencil Hard 634T and the Blackwing
602 Graphite Pencils.
Blaisdell Charcoal Pencil Hard 634T:
Arguably the highest quality "Hard Density" Charcoal Pencil out there.
In 1895, the first U.S. patent for a paper pencil was issued to
Fredrick E. Blaisdell of Philadelphia, Pa. His patent No. 549,952 was
accompanied by No. 550,212 on the same date on a machine for
manufacturing pencils.
Blaisdell Pencil Co. of Wayne Junction, Pennsylvania was purchased by
Sanford Co. (Makers of Playmate, Sharpie, and other popular brandnames)
in 1969, some years later the Blaisdell Charcoal Paper Pencil were
discontinued and renamed under Prismacolor (According to Sanford Co.
customer service).
Eberhard Faber Blackwing 602 Graphite Pencil:
These are original, woodclinched pencils with a unique flattened eraser
that are famous for "Half the pressure, Twice the speed."
These pencils were at one time the favorites of writers like Ernest
Heminway & John Steinbeck.
Here is a great link at The Pencil Pages on the history of the
