Subject: Ebbw Vale back on line after 44 years
Work began today on on laying tracks for a new passenger rail link
between Cardiff and Ebbw Vale. Trains last ran on the route in 1962.

There will be 18 miles of upgraded track and six new stations at Ebbw
Vale Parkway, Llanhilleth, Newbridge, Crosskeys, Risca and Pontymister
and Rogerstone. The stations will include a range of facilities
including car parks and CCTV systems for improved passenger safety.

The hourly service will provide better commuting for people in Blaenau
Gwent.

Trish Law, assembly member for Blaenau Gwent, said she was delighted
work was starting on the rail service after her late husband Peter Law,
MP and AM for Blaenau Gwent, had campaigned for the service.

William Graham, Conservative AM for South Wales East , said he hoped
the Labour Assembly Government would recognise the late Peter Law's
contribution to the restoration of the link.

"It would be fitting to name Ebbw Vale station in his memory, " said Mr
Graham.

He said the link presents Blaenau Gwent with a unique opportunity to
enhance both the economic and social life of the area.

Welsh Enterprise Minister Andrew Davies launched the track work at Ebbw
Vale today.
