I have a Google news alert that gives me a daily summary of news stories in the world press about the Millennium Development Goals.

One thing that's very apparent is that there is very little reported in the US press about the MDGs - most of it is in African or Asian outlets.

So I was delighted last week to see that the NY Times (registration required) carried an article about a World Bank report  with both good news and bad news.

The report suggested an increase in the "extreme poverty line" from $1 to $1.25 per day, and indicated that 1.4 billion people (one in four) in the developing world were living below US$1.25 a day in 2005, down from 1.9 billion (one in two) in 1981.

The NY Times article was followed by an editorial today urging action both by developing and developed countries.

And speaking of MDG news, it seems there is a report to come out in connection with the September 25 event, the full text of which is embargoed until September 4 (Thursday), but the highlights of which are available here.  The key findings and recommendations about the gaps between the MDG promises and reality are available through the links on the left.  I'm going to use those "up to the minute" findings as a basis for communication about the September 25 event.

Thanks so much for this, Eleanor. I have put the editorial on the EGR blog today.

Would anyone be interested in creating a flier/handout using the up-to-the-minute poverty info that Eleanor found? That would be a great resource.

Christ's peace,
