Subject: [IFUW Networks] UN blog on Progress on the Millennium Development Goals

The United Nations is circulating the following invitation to participate in a blog (a website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order) reviewing progress on the Millennium Development Goals:

____________________________________________

Dear colleagues,

The UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN General Assembly will convene a High-level Event on the Millennium Development Goals at UN Headquarters in New York on 25 September 2008. At the halfway point towards 2015, while significant progress has been made, accelerated efforts are needed by all stakeholders to meet the goals. The High-level Event will be a forum for world leaders to review progress, identify gaps, and commit to concrete plans and resources. By asking world leaders to announce their specific action oriented proposals, the High-level Event will help accelerate implementation and follow-through.

As a part of preparatory work for the upcoming High-Level Event, UNDESA and UNDP, with the support from the MDG Network and the UNDG MDG Policy Network, are launching a Blog on MDGs. Overall, this Blog aims to:

1) Promote participation and inclusiveness;

2) Foster partnerships among stakeholders – across all sectors – for the achievement of MDGs; and

3) Promote awareness on the status and trends of the development goals and inspire concrete action to achieve the MDGs by 2015.

The themes covered by this Blog are drawn from the Secretary-General’s background note “Committing to action: Achieving the MDGs”, which consist of: (1) poverty and hunger; (2) health and education; (3) environmental sustainability; (4) gender equality and empowerment of women; and (5) global partnership for development.

It is intended that the Blog will break the barrier of physical distance and hierarchy, accommodating active participation and drawing various insights from all over the world. Your opinions and advice are critical to enrich the upcoming discussions. Upon the conclusion of the Blog, a brief summary of the discussions will be put forward to be considered by the Co-Chairs and Thematic Experts of the round tables at the High-Level Event on MDGs.

Everyone is invited to contribute!
