It is for us, who are more fortunate, to provide [...]

Week-in-Review — October 12, 2008

Aga Khan Museum entitled “Geographies of Islam” opened October 10, 2008 in Toledo Spain. we bring you a few of the media reports in Spanish. According to Director General of The Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Luis Monreal, art is “one of the ways that speak more directly to the emotional intelligence of the people”. The exhibit has been to Parma, London, the Louvre in Paris and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, although with some variations in the exhibits, as explained by the head of the Royal Foundation.

One of the world’s great architecture patrons has hired two distinguished architects—the Indian Modernist Charles Correa and Pritzker Prize winner Fumihiko Maki—to design the Aga Khan Center, a $200-million cultural and religious complex in Toronto. Development agencies for the Aga Khan recently announced details of the scheme, which will include a pair of buildings on a 17-acre suburban site: a religious and community center by Correa and a new Islamic art museum by Maki.

From Uganda, we bring you pictures of Golden Jubilee Stamps to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Mawlana Hazar Imam. Eight new stamps featuring various development projects of the Aga Khan in Uganda have been issued by Posta Uganda. Sno-Cream has a rich history spanning 54 years making it the oldest ice cream parlour in Nairobi. In a display of respect to His Highness the Aga Khan, a congratulatory note he wrote on October 22, 1966 thanking the Sno-Cream management for the delicious ice cream sent to him has been framed and placed right at the entrance of the premises.

From USA, in Bridge City, Texas, Ronny Fontenot worked alongside his 10-year-old grandson, Seth Hartman, along with a group from the Ismaili Community, a group of Shia Muslims from Beaumont and Nederland.  Over 4,800 participated in the AKF Dallas Partnership Walk held on October 4, 2008, at Dallas City Hall Plaza. From the blogosphere, producer Shamir Allibhai reports from Beirut: AN ISLAMIC CONSCIENCE premiered in the Middle East October 5th in Lebanon at the Beirut International Film Festival! And in my opinion formed through the discussions and responses, the audience seemed to be very pleased often times raising “Why have we never heard of the story of the Aga Khan and the Ismailis before? This is an important story that more people need to know about.” Visit Shamir’s blog for photographs of the premiere, and to read his amazing post of Day 3 of the Premiere in Beirut, Lebanon. The Switzerland Premiere - WOW
Switzerland Premiere - Oct 12, 2008, Day 2

Many people came up to me after the screenings to tell me about previous experiences they have had with the Aga Khan, his father and/or his grandfather. They were all so happy to have heard about this film and that a film was made on the Ismailis. They brought more than just stories, they brought photos too - especially to show and share with me. Oh and by the way, these were mainly non-Ismailis who were coming up to me with the anecdotes and picts.

Switzerland - Landed
Switzerland - Day 1 - Oct 11, 2008

I was hosted by an Ismaili and the small Zurich jamat. Most had not seen the film and were looking forward to seeing it on Sunday. They have many questions they tell me.

Shahnee Zaver - Actress/Producer

Posted: 16 Oct 2008 10:33 AM CDT

NEW YORK, NY

3,2,1 Action!…As a producer and an actor, Shahnee Zaver has recently started her own film production company, GOLDEN PRINCESS PICTURES in New York. The focus will be on doing co-productions with India and China.

Originally from Vancouver, Ms. Zaver started off in film and television working on such shows as Tru Calling, Stephen King’s The Dead Zone, DaVinci’s Inquest and The Chris Isaac Show. After receiving an acting scholarship for a conservatory in New York almost 4 years ago, Ms. Zaver packed up, took off for the Big Apple and hasn’t looked back since.

Ms. Zaver has had a busy year, recently staging, starring in and producing an Off-Broadway production of Toyer alongside Olivier French and directed by Ed Blum who recently worked with Ewen McGregor on his last film. Toyer is a contemporary psycho-thriller and with the success of its New York run, she is looking to stage a production of it in London and Paris early next year. She has also completed a film directed by the iconic Abel Ferrara about a love-torn flamenco dancer. Excited about her new venture as the head of a film production company, Ms. Zaver says it was a natural step. “These days actors are producers, directors and vice versa. This is first and foremost a business and it makes a lot of sense to learn about the business you’re working in. It also allows you to create your own opportunities.” Opportunities, she says are everywhere. “Despite what’s been happening in the financial market, I’m optimistic. In good times and in difficult ones, people still watch films. There are opportunities abound.” And not just in Hollywood. “There is a lot of cross-over occurring in the Asian and South Asian markets. For example, Indian production companies are teaming up with Hollywood ones and deals are being made to co-produce films. Bollywood actors are crossing over to Hollywood. It’s a very exciting time for the film industry. It’s not just about Hollywood anymore. The film industry is truly a global industry now.”

The first project on the horizon for GOLDEN PRINCESS PICTURES is an action thriller feature film set in New York, Miami and India.

Muslim Spaces of Worship and Gathering

Posted: 16 Oct 2008 01:58 AM CDT

There are some amazing photographs of Muslim Spaces of Worship and Gathering available at the source if you click on the picture below (including photographs of Gwadar Jamatkhana in Pakistan).

While the mosque is the site most often associated with Muslim expressions of piety, there are a range of spaces used by Muslim communities – Shi‘a and Sunni – for their worship and gathering. These range from the ashurkhana and zawiya to the khanqah and tekke. While some of these spaces are specific to particular Muslim communities, others are clustered geographically or are prominent amongst particular cultural groups. This gallery, based on fieldwork in ten countries, showcases the richness and diversity of the Muslim umma through the diversity of the spaces used for expressions of piety.

Public Service Media vs. Private and Commercial Media - Article by Tabish Bhimani

Posted: 15 Oct 2008 09:39 AM CDT

It is a very arduous task, if not impossible, to affirm whether it is the privately or publicly owned media that facilitate democracy and act as a counterweight to institutions of power. The reason in part is the existence of various schools of thought on notions of the public sphere, the constitution of democracy, and cultural hegemony. Another facet of this conundrum draws from the problems of cultural integration and dominant ideologies, and how they are very intricately connected to these notions of democracy and publicity. In this paper, the author will attempt to discuss the differing schools of thought on the public sphere, moving on to discuss the nature of both the public and private media, drawing a conclusion as to which form serves a democratic way of social life.

In a ruinous state - by Nayanjot Lahiri, Archaeology Teacher

Posted: 14 Oct 2008 10:10 AM CDT

Why are some monuments carefully preserved, and under what conditions do others decay and disappear? This is a question that many who have walked in and around Humayun’s tomb in Delhi must have asked themselves.

Humayun’s resting place and the gardens that surround it are among the better preserved historic landscapes in Delhi. No doubt, the inclusion of Humayun’s tomb in the World Heritage list in 1993 dramatically raised its public profile, and played a part in attracting the Aga Khan Trust for Culture to restore its garden, even if this was a gift on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of India’s independence.

Since the garden restoration, and the clearance of the entry into the complex, visitor numbers have increased by over 1,000 per cent. The trust is now back in partnership with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), co-funded by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, to conserve the tomb itself, and its surrounding buildings. In other words, one can easily see why restoration work has proceeded so well here.
