The Muslim Civilizations

Did you know?

... Arabesque is a distinctive decorative style seen in Islamic art?

Islamic art has been produced for over fourteen hundred years in diverse regions, from the steppes of Central Asia to the savannahs of Africa. The numerous languages spoken and the widely varied cultural traditions influenced the styles of Islamic art, hence no single style or technique prevailed. One of the decorative styles used stems that scrolled symmetrically and regularly around evenly spaced leaves and flowers. This style of decorative art is generally referred to as arabesque, a term created by fifteenth or sixteenth century Europeans who admired it and associated it with Arab lands.

The arabesque is characterized by its rhythmic waves, often implying an infinite design with no beginning or end. One of the contributing factors to the infinite pattern of the arabesque is the growth of leaves, flowers or other motifs from one another rather than from a single stem. Arabesque is often combined with interlacing geometric and other decorative patterns. Developed in the Eastern Mediterranean regions once controlled by the Romans, the arabesque acquired its own distinctive forms in Islamic lands.
