Steve - I have the same issue here.  I hear that it's the Hughes boxes
and DTV knows about it and is working on a fix.  No idea what's going
on though (maybe they sent a bad flash trying to update the cards
before superbowl?)

Subject: Re: I have a problem
From the snippets I've been able to read DTv is having problems with
their computer system. It's screwing up existing customers and they've
been having problems activating new customers since the beginning of
the year. I haven't seen anything on how long it will take to fix.
I've been having problems with some of my boxes getting duplicate
channels since the new year. I assume it's part of the same problems.

Same problem here in northern CA. The first thing I noticed was on
Monday evening the screen went to all black and white. It stayed that
way for about half an hour, then came back. After that it started
resetting itself about every 20-30 minutes. By last night it was down
to every 8-10 minutes. It stopped about 10'oclock last night, but it's
back at about 20-30 minutes today. You can tell when it's about to trip
because it goes all hinky about a minute or so before it flips out.
Symptoms range from going to big colored dots, like the dish has snow
on it., to losing the OSD, or just going to a solid color screen,
usually green or grey. I even tried moving the box off the top of the
TV and pointing a fan at the grill, no joy.
Before going on hold for twenty minutes and then being walked through a
pointless script I decided the see if anyone else was having the same
problem, I'm glad I did.

I've got a model: GAEBOA

If anyone has spoken to DTV about this Il'd be interested in finding
out what they were told.

I called DirecTV last night because I'm having this exact problem (I
thought for sure it was my receiver before I called that I put a
heatsink on the processor... no luck though).  After I finally got
through (first couple times, the line was BUSY) the tech said as soon
as he answered, "Let me guess, your receiver is turning itself off and
back on".  So DirecTV is definately aware of the problem.
Unfortunatly, the tech said he didn't know what was causing the
problem, he just guessed it was probably a recent software update and
that they were working on a fix.  He also said he'd credit my account
for the downtime, so I'll follow up with DirecTV on this once the
problem is fixed.

My DirecTV receiver model is Hughes GAEB0A located in the Seattle-metro
area and 89-92% signal quality (100% on the local channel
transponders).

I may have figured it out. Check out this story:
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solar_storm_050118.html

Solar flares can definately cause havoc with sattelite systems. This
also fits with the fact that here it went away after 10'oclock last
night (anyone know when the sattelite would have passed into the
earth's shadow?), it stopped at about 5'oclock today.

So it's at least a working theory. I just wonder why DTV didn't put up
a message or something like they have in the past.
Hopefully it'll clear up soon.

Sorry Mountain, but the issue began back on Jan 17th.  The DirecTV
techs are aware, it's a software updates issues, and it affects models:

GAEB0A, SONY SAT-A65, SATA65A, SAT-B65 and the SAT-B65A

Interesting coincidence though !!!  Thanks.

Okay, well it was just a thought...would have at least made it a little
more bareable at least, maybe. Wierd though how the rest rate slows
down at night.

As of 3'oclock today it's still doing it (just in case DTV is reading
this board.)

A question does occur to me though. What happens if the power to the
box is completely shut off when they try to send the 'fix'. Mine is on
a surge strip that gets turned off every night. Just curious if anyone
knows.
