Friends,

I would like to wish our readers a Happy Shabu'ot holiday.

My latest Huffington Post article is now available on-line:

  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-shasha/finding-jewish-feminism-i_b_572978.html

My review of the Public Image Ltd. Concert has been posted to the band’s website:

http://www.pilofficial.com/press.html#gigs

We begin this week’s newsletter with my review of the recent bio-pic on the social activist Temple Grandin that is being screened on HBO.  For those – like me – who were not aware of the work of Ms. Grandin, this film is an excellent introduction to her life and the important work that she is doing in the world of Autism.

The historian J.H. Elliott presents us with a review essay on some recent scholarly studies of the Jewish converts to Catholicism in medieval Spain and the cultural context of their place in the world.

Rachelle Klieger gives us yet another in a seemingly endless series of articles regarding the ongoing program to assert the refugee status of Middle Eastern Jews.  The Sephardim are finally being noticed by the larger Jewish world - for all the wrong reasons.

Ari Shavit interviews Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that provides us with some very interesting details regarding Netanyahu’s views on Jewish history.

Our friend Carlo Strenger examines the psychological issues that inform the problems with peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

David Klinghoffer looks at the recent scandals in the Jewish world and sees this as an important moment for Orthodoxy.

Gideon Levy analyzes the way in which sexual misconduct has been dealt with in the religious and secular Jewish communities in the wake of the Elon affair.

Abir Kopty discusses non-violent protest in the Palestinian community.

The Associated Press reports on the recent attack on a Cairo Synagogue.

Jeremy Last gives us a very interesting profile of the singer Alabina.

We close with some of the extreme rantings of Dennis Prager and his call for Jews to adopt the views of the Christian Right.
