Subject: Extended School Year Services
Our son's teacher has documented that, due to the amount he regresses
over the summer, he should receive extended school year services.  The
program that is offered through our local school district is for
students in 2nd grade through high school (all together) and is more
of a social "life skills" program - not academic.

Even though our son is only 5 years old, which is much younger than
any of the other children in the program, they are offering the
opportunity for him to attend.  Because he needs a 1:1 aide for safety
reasons, and the school district says that they cannot provide one, a
parent would need to go with him.

This program does not seem appropriate for our son's needs.  It
typically runs 4 days per week for three consecutive weeks, but our
son would need more than that to maintain his skills all summer.  We
are also really looking for a program that will work on sensory
issues, speech & language and help him maintain his ability to focus
on a given task for certain amounts of time, since these are the areas
that go so far "backward" over a 3-month summer break.  In addition,
we have other children that would need childcare if I agreed to attend
the program as his "aide."

Clearly, the programming that is offered through our district is not
going to work for our son, but if they can't offer what we need, what
is the district's responsibility in getting him services that they
have documented are necessary?

Any suggestions or help that anyone could offer would be greatly
appreciated.  Please respond to thewaytop...@charter.net.  Thank you!

I would think that they would have to at least provide an aide for the
program that they already offer. If they can't/won't I would then
think that they would have to provide transportation to a district
that does provide the type of programing that your child needs.  I
would contact Kathy Holkeboer at CAUSE Citizens Alliance to Uphold
Special Education 1800-221-9105 or www.causeonline.org ASAP. CAUSE
provides free services to families and professioanls of children with
special needs. They help parents navigate the spec ed system and to
understand their children's rights and the schools responsibilities.
Let us know what you find out.

Based on what I learned at the seminar entitled "The Best Darn IEP Ever
Written", your son should very much be provided an aide and should also have
a program directed at helping him maintain his IEP goals and objectives in
order to prevent regression.  I would contact Maggie Kolk she's an advocate
at the Arc of Kent County and was the presenter for the above seminar.  She
was very open, honest and knows the laws.  She offered several times
throughout the seminar that if a concern or question arose to please contact
her.  She serves lots of people and parents of children with disabilities.
Her phone # is 616-459-3339 and her email is mag...@arckent.org
