Subject: Potty Training Problems
My five-year-old daughter is giving me fits when it comes to potty
training.  She knows exactly what to do on the potty and has control
for several hours at a time, but she will never tell me when she needs
to go.  She relies on me to tell her that she needs to go potty and
will often put up a fight about going, but once we get there she goes
almost every time.

She has the verbal skills to tell me when she needs to go, and I truly
believe that she is capable of being potty trained at this point, but
I don't know how to get over the hurdle of recognizing the urge to go
to the bathroom and going on her own.

She seems to do slightly better at school or other people's homes.  I
know she is capable of reaching this milestone, but we need to find a
plan that gets us going in that direction.  ANY suggestions will be
welcome.  Please email your responses to thebai...@charter.net.  Thank
you!

Hi,

I have potty trained 2 of my 4 children ( one has downs one does not)
with the information in the book called Toilet Training in less than a
day  by Nathan Azrin and Richard Foxx.  It can be found/ordered online
or at barnes  and nobles.  It is a totally a rewards system or what we
now like to call behavior mod. system.  You have to realize that the
book is copy righted from 1974 and the authors are doctors so they use
terms such as "the retarded child" etc that are some what offensive
today.  But if you can get over this fact the information presented is
valuable.  My son with down syndrome is now 13.  The ave. age for boys
with downs to potty train is 8yrs and that is when we finally got him
trained using this material.  We had tried and struggled doing many
other things for years with no success.  I will not lie, my son still
does not like to go to the bathroom often.  He does not have accidents
but he does hold his urine for long periods of time.  I still give
reminders a couple of times a day to potty and he does not like it
either.  All this said he is doing well and despite his stubbornness
in regularly using the toilet he has done great.
