Del-Mi District Scout Leaders,

The following message is from Patrick Donnelly, a long time Del-Mi District Volunteer, about the Boy Scouts of America's Good Turn for America initiative.

While we are on the topic giving back, I wanted to thank each of you for giving countless hours to the youth of our community by serving as a Scouting volunteer.  Scouting truly would not be possible without your service.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving Del-Mi Scout Leaders,

I recommend ‘Garbage Can Turkey’.  Really impresses the family!    “Google” it if interested.

Good Turn for America

I was asked to remind everyone of the importance of recording all their Unit’s service hours completed this year.

Thus far, we’ve only had 6 units load any hours into the system totaling 963 hours.  I know in previous years, Del-Mi has recorded more than 20,000 hours.   At this point we just need you to record the hours you’ve already completed.

This is not just a “look good” numbers campaign.  United Way, the single largest donor to BSA, has defined ‘service to the community’ as a critical determining factor in allocating funds.  Borrowing from a Council letter regarding the topic, “Good Turn for America” is an important initiative that offers ways for us to:

  • MONEY – Open doors to new funding sources while maintaining existing ones
  • SERVE – Highlight the positive results of our programs
  • PRIDE – Continue to build on the positive image of Scouting
  • RECRUIT – Attract new members who crave the satisfaction of serving others

You may ask what defines service for this program.  It’s a fairly liberal definition but I tried to list a few possibilities you may not be aware of.  Certainly Eagle Scout projects and the White River Cleanup are two big ones for Del-Mi Units.

  1. Any Service to a Scout Camp or any camp whether as a member of a Troop, OA , Firecrafter, etc.
  2. Planning and running a Camporee for the district.
  3. Teaching a Merit Badge at a Unit, District, or Council Level.
  4. Training of other Scouters or Youth in regard to any of the BSA training.
  5. Providing service to your chartered organization or local elementary school.

If you are not sure, please contact Nat or Matt.

OK, so once you’ve got the service hour information together you’ll need to visit the GTFA page. Have your username and password handy in order to enter and ensure credit for your unit.  If you need your unit code and/or password, contact the Roesch Service Center at 317-925-1900.

Let’s all make an effort to get our numbers in by the middle of December.

Thanks,
Patrick Donnelly
Del-Mi District Volunteer

P.S. Critical information for December RT – I’m partial to Gingerbread cookies.
