My Best Friend is a Scout: Fall 2008 Cub Scout Recruitment Campaign

The Del-Mi District would like to thank you for your past and continued service to the youth of Hamilton and Tipton Counties. We would also like to inform you of a new “My Best Friend is a Scout” recruitment campaign (MBF) that runs from September 21 to November 15 that the Del-Mi District is piloting for the council.

The whole purpose of a “My Best Friend is a Scout” recruitment campaign is to encourage our Scouts to invite their friends to join them in the fun of Cub Scouting. As leaders, you have probably already noticed that boys stay in Scouting longer if their friends are involved. His friends are there to encourage him along the way. His friends are also there to help him if he missed a meeting due to another activity like sports. This assistance will help prevent a Scout from falling behind on his rank advancement. We want to make sure that every Cub Scout has the opportunity to earn the highest rank in Cub Scouting—the Arrow of Light—and be prepared for his journey to the Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouting.

The Del-Mi District pilot promotion is different from previous MBF campaigns in the sense that the incentive item for the boys is no longer just a recruiter patch. Now the recruiter and the new Scout that he recruits will each receive a pass for a free session of laser tag at Laser Flash in Carmel. Plus, the recruiter will still receive a recruiter patch for the first boy that he recruits into Cub Scouting.

To ensure that Scouts are properly credited for boys that they recruit, the boy’s friend needs to place the recruiter’s name in the upper right corner of the youth application. Special applications have been developed to help ensure that they are filled out correctly, but the normal youth applications can still be used for this promotion provided that the recruiter’s name is in the correct location. You can find the special application online at www.del-mi.org/join/laser/.

As with all applications, they should be submitted to the appropriate person at the pack first and then mailed or brought down to the Scout office with the correct amount of money for that month.

We hope that with this promotion, boys will be more likely to ask their friends to join Cub Scouts. We would encourage you to promote this new campaign at your pack or den meetings between September 21 and November 15.

It should be noted, that the MBF described above is only valid for boys that join a Cub Scout Pack in the Del-Mi District (Hamilton and Tipton counties), does not apply to boys that were recruited prior to September 21 or after November 15, and that there is no limit to the number of passes that one boy may earn during the promotion period. Laser tag is a restricted activity in Scouting. As such, laser tag should not be conducted as part of a pack or den’s activity schedule. The passes provided are intended for the boys to use during their own personal time.

We look forward to having even more boys join in the fun of Scouting this year. With your help, we can give even more families the chance to become a part of our Scouting family.

Popcorn Sale is Almost Here

The annual council popcorn sale begins next Saturday, September 27. We hope that all of your Scouts are participating to allow them to pay their own way through Scouting. (A Scout is thrifty.) From a logistics perspective, this is a reminder that www.del-mi.org/popcorn/ will be updated with the most current information about our delivery site when it becomes available. This page will include a link where units can schedule a time slot to pick up popcorn later next week. We are awaiting final confirmation on the number of bays that will be available to us from the delivery site. Our hope is to publish the scheduling information on Monday. When your unit picks up popcorn, please remember to bring a copy of your unit's youth roster with you to submit to our popcorn kernels or district executive. You can also e-mail them in advance to msi...@crossroadsbsa.org.

Silver Beaver Nominations Due September 30

In case you are not aware, the "Silver Beaver" is the highest and most prestigious honor awarded to a volunteer by a local council. Del-Mi has had many deserving volunteers receive this award over the years. Of course, there are many other deserving candidates within Del-MI that will receive it in the future. In order for this to happen, we need you to work with other volunteers within your Pack, Troop, Crew, etc. to take the time and effort to recognize outstanding scouting volunteers you work with.

While the nomination forms (located at www.crossroadsbsa.org) and deadline (September 30) remain the same, there is a significant change in the process.

Specifically, the selection committee, one representative from each district, will not be made aware of the names of the candidates. A scoring system has been established for the committee members to follow to determine the award winners. The scores will be based on information contained within the nomination form. In past years, a committee member may have been able to "fill in the gaps" verbally if the form did not contain all the candidates info. and history. It is now critical that the time and effort be taken to thoroughly complete the nomination form for the candidate. Also, please do not attach e-mails and separate docs to the nomination form. Only the official nomination form should be submitted.

Please contact me if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Pat Donnelly

Brickyard Bash, October 11, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

As leaders, it is important for us to deliver the promise of FUN in Cub Scouting as early and as often as possible. One great way to introduce our new families to the fun times that await the boys at summer camp is by having them participate in the Brickyard Bash (Cub Scout Joining Event) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, October 11, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The cost is $5 per person. More information may be found online at www.crossroadsba.org.

Webelos Encampment for Webelos 1 and Webelos 2 Scouts

The purpose of this event is to give Webelos Scouts the opportunity to experience outdoor activities similar to the Camporees that take place in Boy Scouts; overnight weekend camping with advancement opportunities, fellowship, and fun. This event is the result of a joint effort between youth Firecrafter and Order of the Arrow members in the Del-Mi District.

There is a separateseperate program for both Webelos 1 and Webelos 2 scouts. Learn more online at www.del-mi.org/cubscouts/ and look under upcoming events on the right.
