Poll - Drama stimulates the conversation?

Hello all,

This new group has been on the quiet side so far. Somebody once told me that they think "new_cryonet might have a lot of readers in part because of the drama that is there, that maybe people are attracted to things written by the most controversial cryonicists." I wonder if it's true?

Everyone here is a cryonicist because they want to indefinitely extend their own life span, and many of us would like to extend the lifespans of other people as well. By appearances, we would have a lot in common, at least within the scope of our rather large common goal.  I imagine the quote was correct, that the mudslinging  probably did stimulate a lot of conversation. Conversely, I wonder if a group with lower drama would be used much.  I personally think it would be great to have a place to talk about cryonics and life extension with a little less fighting. I'm wondering if others would prefer the same thing or not.

I have no need for "drama" or "fighting".

Not indifferent, but I am somewhat burnt out with attempting to do
anything to aid/help cryonics and I find other time pursuits more rewarding.

I'm indifferent to this particular group succeeding. If you do a google search for "cryolink" or "cryonics" or "cryonics forum" this doesn't show in the first page of results. When this group was first created I did a google groups search for "cryonics" and there are actually already multiple cryonics google groups. So this is just splitting up an already quite split up community even more.

This forum http://www.longecity.org/forum/forum/61-cryonics/ shows up in many google search results and has many well known cryonics members participating. I would prefer if it took over as the primary forum instead of new_cryonet.

I don't feel the same way about new_cryonet that other people do. I don't feel like it's terrible, dramatic, or w/e. I think MD's posts are fantastic. The only issue I have is that it's a completely hidden email group that you can find through word of mouth only. It's quite silly that email communication is still the primary method for the cryonics community.

If you do a google search for "cryolink" or "cryonics" or "cryonics forum" this doesn't show in the first page of results.  The only issue I have is that it's a completely hidden email group that you can find through word of mouth only. 

Yes, it would be bad to have an invisible group. The main pages are set to be publicly visible, and they are the first results if you search google for: "cryolink group", or cryolink google group. (It's not word of mouth only.) It's a new webpage, so the more general search terms such as "cryolink" by itself are not as strong (we are at the top of page 3). That's normal functioning, it takes a some time for any new page to move higher in the search results.

I have no idea how I ended up in this group. I don't object to being in it now that I'm reasonably convinced it's not some kind of marketing/phishing thing, but I find the forum format awkward and am not likely to participate much. I just read the digest emails.

I wish it well but am indifferent for myself.

"Drama" + "Cryonics" = urination contests with the uninformed in my experience. This location is fairly obscure, at least for now, and thus is unlikely to attract many big fish that can really help popularize cryonics once educated. Helping people see reason is the kind of drama I like.

I haven't answered your specific questions because they are somewhat difficult to answer. But here are my thoughts:

- Any moderated groups success depends on a very subjective opinion of who is allowed to participate. A huge topic in itself.
-Yes - the average joe cryonicist is indeed attracted to drama, judging by the number of responses to some topic like "religion-and-cryonics.".
- harder topics like the science/tech (or any other *useful* stuff ) will have lesser participation. Lower participation is not necessarily bad given that for most part we are avoiding "trivial" discussions.
- the most productive people IMO may to too busy to browse through lots of post, so lesser participation and fewer posts are perfectly fine.
