Looks like a great firing Jesse! Can you point us to photos of the
kiln? I'd like to share some of the results of my latest firing. Loading
strategy was a little different than my last firing, a result of
having more small pieces. Also, I had more help with the load and
firing, which I'd done largely by myself up to now. I guess I'm
confident enough to risk others' work now. We fired for 38 hrs to

Thanks Paul: I'll give that clay a spin... you asked about the insulated
floor. I must agree that it was worth the work. A bonus that I hadn't
counted on was the hugh reduction of smoke!! In times past when the kiln
would be belching smoke... it was completely smokeless!!!
Make Good Pots
~Craig

Lee: This job takes 2 people. A really cheap tester like $4 just for
"hot" or "not" is needed - try it on various wires including the one
in question - if it IS hot - start shutting off breakers until you
shut the one off that kills the garage wire in question. Not that it
is NOT hot you can cut a sample of the wire for identification

 Marian
Thanks for the concern re standard limits.
As the glazes posted will have to be made using my
own available materials things will change anyway.
Also I never fuss about standard limits. My shinos,
for example, aren't even in the same house,
let alone the same room as "standards" allow.

I just got a book on American stoneware potteries, will pay more attention to source materials, your state is mentioned a lot. Lee, what was with all the pigs every big pottery across the US seemed to make? Just little pigs amid their functional ware -- not even as piggy banks.

Marian

Des, I was thinking about the ambers after posting last night (I left school studios here not long after that experience) -- I never did run calculations on the glaze I tinkered with to see if it was within standard limits. As I recall I was more intrigued with the streaky matt opaques that resulted from the yellow iron oxide substitutions for yellow ochre that gave 'clear' and glossy ambers. That's still an interesting question -- at the time there were too many variables, from application of glazes to source materials to firing conditions, so I stalled thinking about that...

Why not call and ask them for a sample and chat them up about the business and its history? People will share surprising amounts of info if they have an interested person asking.
So many of the resources down here in Texas, including those we'd have a field day with, are used for odd things, road or construction fill, have been abandoned, or just never got developed due to environmental regulations and other economic reasons.
