A most fascinating paper. This is probably the most intensively studied
area for Cicadas anywhere in Texas. Unfortunately, it's a monster
download. I can email anyone a PDF of the paper if that'll help. Another
oddity is that apparently, since it was published in a Chinese journal,
the English text can't be cut and pasted... Mike Quinn, Austin

Abstract: The primary aim was the identification and determination of
distribution patterns of the cicadas in relation to the plant
distribution in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, located in extreme
southwestern Texas, USA. Cicadas were collected in all areas of the
reserve, which is also designated as a US National Park, noting specific
location, habitat characteristics and plant species present. The
distribution of each species was mapped and correlated to vegetation
type in those locations. There are twelve species (all native) in six
genera of cicadas found within the reserve. Tibicen chisosensis Davis is
the only endemic species but Diceroprocta canescens Davis and Okangodes
terlingua Davis have very limited distributions outside the official
reserve boundaries. Each species shows a close association to
particular vegetation types. The distribution of particular cicada
species is restricted by the distribution of their host plants. By the
end of the study we were able to predict which species would be found in
particular habitats
