Position GuideTitle: System Specialist - Java Developer
Location: Des Moines, IA
Supervisor: Work Comp Team Lead

Overall Responsibilities
This position is responsible for Java development on the Workers
Compensation Administration team of Berkley Technology Services Core
Systems. Individual should be able to contribute as an advanced level
application developer for new and existing systems as well as be able
to handle systems integration and application integration development
with other systems. This position requires an individual with
development initiative and ability to work with minimal direction.

Key Accountabilities
This individual will be expected to partner with existing team members
as well as BTS clients and vendors. This position will involve
mentoring Java and Web Application Development, performing code
reviews and leading the architectural design on Java/J2EE component
and web application development projects. Individual should be
familiar with unit testing and black box peer testing of code modules.
Individual will be responsible for configuring web and application
servers for high scalability and performance, as well as architecting
code for optimal performance. Individual may also be working with
application and service vendors to integrate solutions and provide
technical leadership and assistance in the development practices of
our parent company. A successful candidate will have an appetite for
learning new technologies, software, processes and the BTS culture.
Approx travel 30% annually

Experience
Required:

Five years experience with Java development
Five years experience in web based application development and
optimization
Excellent problem solving skills
Five years experience working with relational databases (DB2)
Two years experience working with WebSphere Application Server
Two years project management experience

Preferred:

Property and Casualty insurance
Consulting Experience
Experience with eclipse or RAD


Education/Skills:
Candidate should have a Bachelors degree in Computer Science,
Information Systems Design or related field.
Individual should have excellent interpersonal and communication
skills.
Ability to document thoroughly through strong writing skills and
application design techniques.
Versed in common architectural and design best practices related to
web-based application development and optimization.
