There is a new book called CITY OF WIDOWS: An Iraqi Woman's Account of
War and Resistance by Haifa Zangana coming out right now. It's the
only book (I know of) about the Iraq invasion and occupation, the
status of women before/after, a short history of the last 100 years,
an interpretation of the sectarianism--by an Iraqi for English-
language readers. Haifa Zangana is a fierce witness to her country's
struggles, having been involved in resistance movements in the 60s and
70s, imprisoned by Saddam at Abu Ghraib, and now living in exile in
London. She weaves her own story of growing up there into this concise
narrative of Iraq, leading up to the present, when over 300,000 widows
are living in Baghdad. Please consider this brave book for your next
selection. Thanks. Amy
