Dear Si-Chi:
Thanks so much for your interest. I am currently attendinig the CEAL annual
meeting in San Francisco. I will pass on your interest to other members of
the Membership committee if I get a chance to here at the meeting.
Although so far only one library has posted information on the CEALIP blog
about an east asian library internship (UCSD), I believe there are other
opportunities out there. I understand the Library of Congress might be a
possibility, so I encourage you to investigate on your own.
In the mean time, I am copying this message to the other members of the CEAL
Membership Committee in case they have more information about currently
available internships for East Asian librarianship.
Thanks again for your interest! Good luck with your east asian library
career.

Subject: Summer job or internship seeking
Dear CEAL members,
I am a first year graduate student in Library and Information Science
at the University of Iowa. I am seeking a summer job or internship in
the area of cataloging or digital library service from the period of
June 12 to August 11, 2006. Your information and feedback are important
and highly appreciated.
I am a first year graduate student in Library and Information Science
at the University of Iowa. I also hold a Master's degree in
Sociology, and Bachelor's in Political Sciences and Law at the
National Taiwan University.
I have been working in the Complex Cataloging department of the
University library as a student assistant since September 2005. I have
worked with both copy and original cataloging of East Asian Collections
which include monographs and videos/DVDs. This required me to match
headings with authority records and assign LC call numbers and subject
headings. I have become familiar with AACR2, MARC format, LC
classification system, RLIN database, ALEPH system, and several
cataloging resources.
Since February 2006, I have started working in Digital Library Services
as a student assistant. I have been working on the World War II
Newspaper Clippings Digital Project and the Iowa Academy of Science
Project. My responsibility is to digitize clippings, and enter
metadata, creating bibliographic descriptions of the electronic
materials. I am able to work with CONTENTdm, Adobe Photoshop, and OCR
software, such as ABBYY, for the character recognition task. I have
also learned to manage a large amount of scanned materials by
processing batch function in Photoshop, Acrobat, and Excel.
I am willing to learn any new skills a position might require, and
ready to contribute what I have learned from my past education. Please
feel free to contact me at (319)594-0933 or si-chi-c...@uiowa.edu if
you have any questions. I will be happy to provide my resume and
discuss the possibility of setting up an interview.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Si-Chi Chin
