Mas esta informação é totalmente falsa e usa diferentes critérios entre os modelos comparados. Estas afirmações tinham como base um modelo com Windows com especificações inferiores ao modelo com GNU/Linux que estava a servir como comparação. Quando comparamos dois modelos com especificações iguais, como o ASUS eeePC 900, podemos constatar que a versão com Windows é, na verdade, perto de 150 euros mais caro que a versão com GNU/Linux. Respondeu o responsável pelo projecto, um bocado irritado, dizendo mais ou menos que o FTP está acabado. Como o email circulou numa mailing list e já há-de estar nos arquivos web, deixo aqui a resposta para que possam dar a vossa opinião. A minha é que o FTP ainda é muito útil, mas ele tem razão nalguns pontos. "It's not abandonware, it's still supported and new releases will see the light. Patches are welcome. And even if the current version is getting old, it won't stop working just because it's getting old. And it's not like Qmail (or like it used to be), the licence is BSD for a long time, so it's not open-source software that no one can tweak. To be fair, I've a lost a interest in the project, with the hope that the FTP protocol would die. Seriously, the FTP protocol is totally obsolete, it was broken by design and it was never fixed. Using dynamic ports for every transfer is crazyness, and we can easily guess that it was designed before firewalls and NAT were invented. Securing the protocol is adding artificial bloat to it and introducing new incompatibilities with routers and firewalls. Try to run a server on a non-standard port. Good luck to get your customers reach it. The RFCs are vague and implementations interpret it freely even for simple things like listing directories. Seriously, the FTP protocol is crap. We're year 2008, it's silly that we still use it, while SSH (sftp, channels multiplexing, crypto, compression...) and HTTP (webdav) have solid fundations to replace it in a way, way, way better way. This is also a reason why I wanted to spent time on other projects. Web-based projects because this is what everyone has to do nowadays for a living. Some other small daemons. And another project that should get public in a few weeks, a very high performance distributed instant messenging server (not in Erlang, not a Jabber implementation, but in C with libevent and very aggressive memory caching, and with a simple RESTful API). Netflix Watch Now: Missing too much popular content Posted: 09 May 2008 05:19 PM CDT March of the Penguins: the only movie in Netflix's top 100 that you can stream (Credit: CNET Networks) The "Watch Now" feature on Netflix is a great idea: instant access to thousands of movies and TV shows, available for instant streaming to your browser at the touch of a button. There's just one big problem: despite an advertised library of over 8,000 titles, very few of them seem to be movies or TV shows that I want to watch. Out of 41 titles currently in my queue, only 4--The King of Marvin Gardens, Das Boot, The Good German, and Pickup of South Street--are available to be streamed. OK, fine--my taste for older movies is probably throwing things off. Surely plenty of newer, more popular movies are available to be streamed, right? Wrong. A quick survey of the site's top 100 list (and the top 25 list for each genre) reveals that little more than 5 percent of the site's most popular movies and TV shows are available for streaming. For instance, March of the Penguins is the only movie in the top 100 that's available for streaming (and it's also one of the 4 streamable documentaries). Meanwhile, several key genres have no streaming titles in the top 25, including action, children, comedy, drama, horror, musicals, romance, sci-fi, and thrillers. (Credit: CNET) Given the on-the-fly nature of such most popular lists, these numbers will no doubt fluctuate a bit. And Netflix has definitely been building up the Watch Now library--there is, believe it or not, a better selection than there was a few months earlier. But it seems clear that the Watch Now library is going to remain woefully underpopulated for the near future--and it's unclear how much Netflix can do about it. Unlike buying bulk orders of DVDs for its disc-by-mail business, the Watch Now queue is determined by the deals it can cut with studios. And while those same studios will let the likes of Apple and Vudu offer a decent selection of download-to-own movies on their respective streaming boxes--often available the same day as the DVD release--they seem far less willing to negotiate deals that will allow most services (with the possible exception of cable video-on-demand) day-and-date streaming rentals on a pay-per-view basis. Netflix Watch Now is currently only available to subscribers on Windows PCs using Internet Explorer. The company has hinted that the service will be coming to Macs by the end of 2008. Indeed, a recent demo of Microsoft's Silverlight technology showed that--theoretically, anyway--the company could deliver high-quality on-demand video streams to Macs--using the Firefox browser, no less!--replete with a variety of social networking and interactivity that bests current DVD offerings. And Netflix has also confirmed that four hardware partners (one of which is LG) are scheduled to release a "Netflix box" by year's end, which will allow the Watch Now library to be viewed directly on your TV--no computer necessary. But until Netflix is able to negotiate deals for a wider range of compelling content--something far better than the five percent of its most popular titles that it's currently offering--the Watch Now feature will remain more a gimmick than a compelling service. Só um terço dos municípios cobra taxa aos operadores de telecomunicações Posted: 15 May 2008 05:39 AM CDT A taxa criada há quatro anos para compensar as autarquias pela utilização do seu subsolo para passagem de infra-estruturas de telecomunicações tem tido uma implementação no terreno pouco fácil. A falta de fiscalização é apontada como razão. Quatro anos após a entrada em vigor da Taxa Municipal de Direitos de Passagem apenas 110 dos 308 municípios a implementaram, fixando o valor que os operadores devem fazer reflectir na factura do cliente como forma de compensar o município pela utilização do seu subsolo, para fazer passar infra-estruturas de telecomunicações. Na notícia avançada hoje pelo Jornal de Negócios também é dada nota de que nos municípios onde foi definido um valor entre 0 e 0,25 por cento da factura do telefone - tecto máximo definido na legislação - apenas a PT Comunicação aplica a taxa ao cliente. Para a falta de eficácia da aplicação da taxa contribui segundo a investigação a inexistência de mecanismos de fiscalização que garantam o cumprimento das medidas fixadas pelas autarquias. Outra questão a gerar desentendimentos entre operadores e municípios é a interpretação da Lei, que para alguns municípios permite a coexistência de duas taxas aplicadas à utilização das condutas municipais. A TMDP e a taxa de utilização do subsolo que existia antes desta e que em alguns casos passou a ser cobrada cumulativamente com a nova taxa, desencadeando vários processos legais que decorrem nos tribunais. O jornal dá conta de uma proposta que está a ser preparada pela Associação dos Operadores de Telecomunicações e que pode ser um contributo para resolver a situação. Esta proposta passa pela alteração do período de cobrança da taxa que passaria de mensal a semestral facilitando aos operadores a gestão do processo de obtenção do valor e passagem deste para os municípios. Para a fiscalização a proposta da APRITEL é antiga e defende que deveria ser a Anacom a assegurar estas funções, um papel que o regulador já não disse não estar nas suas competências.

Portáteis do e-escolas avançam para uma capacidade em disco de 320 GB Posted: 15 May 2008 11:19 AM CDT A TMN anunciou hoje novidades à oferta para o e-escolas reforçando a diversidade e garantindo o maior número de modelos, capacidade em disco, memória RAM e alargando a capacidade de processamento do catálogo. Depois de no final do mês passado a Optimus ter anunciado a extensão da sua oferta de portáteis via e-escolas, passando de um para quatro fabricantes, é agora a vez da TMN anunciar novidades e aumentar o tecto de capacidade em disco oferecido no catálogo de portáteis a que alunos e professores têm acesso por 150 euros. A operadora passa a disponibilizar um portátil da Acer, que também já integrava a gama da Optimus com o mesmo modelo, mas apresenta-o com maior capacidade em disco. Trata-se do Acer Extensa 5620Z que dos 250 GB, salta para os 320 GB na oferta TMN. Ao nível da capacidade em disco a oferta do e-escolas, que neste momento permite comprar 7 marcas e modelos de portáteis distintos, passa a contar com um modelo de 320 GB, dois modelos com uma capacidade em disco de 250 GB (o Acer Extensa vendido pela Optimus e o Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo vendido pela TMN, que recentemente foi também actualizado para os 250 GB). Os restantes modelos comercializados no âmbito do programa alinham numa capacidade de 200 GB, no caso do Toshiba Satélite L40, presente na oferta dos três operadores e nos 160 GB, no que se refere aos restantes modelos disponíveis. Analisando a utilização da Internet em Portugal na última década, a Marktest concluiu que o volume de acessos à rede evoluiu 18 vezes. Isto significa que, de 1997 até esta parte, os acessos subiram dos 2,4 por cento para os 44,6 por cento. Pelas contas da empresa de estudos de mercado, o crescimento anual situou-se nos 37,2 por cento. O que mais distinguiu os utilizadores ao longo dos anos foi a variável referente à classe social. Ao longo dos últimos dez anos o número de lares com acesso à rede aumentou e, actualmente, 66,7 por cento das residências pertencentes às classes média e superiores têm Internet. O mesmo acontece em 28,3 por cento dos lares das classes sociais mais baixas. O mesmo estudo mostra ainda que é em Lisboa e no Porto que se encontra o maior número de casas com acesso à Internet. Mas confirmei no Jornal de Notícias: Alexandre Rocha, um técnico de informática de 30 anos, foi condenado por um Tribunal, em Braga, a pagar uma multa de 1260 euros e uma indemnização de 750 euros a uma funcionária da 2ª Conservatória do Registo Predial de Braga pelos crimes de injúria e difamação agravadas. O que é que fez Alexandre Rocha, para merecer tal acusação e condenação? Escreveu uma reclamação no Livro Amarelo, onde se queixava de mau atendimento, de ter sido sistematicamente mal informado e que “num acto execrável” e para “vingar-se”, a funcionária praticou um “abuso de poder”. A funcionária diz que Alexandre não só escreveu, mas disse também a parte do “execrável” e do “abuso de poder”. Muitos de nós, dependendo da experiência que temos em repartições públicas, já passámos por situações semelhantes. E eu confesso que já tive vontade de tecer este tipo de considerações sobre alguns funcionários que conheci. E já usei o Livro Amarelo mais do que uma vez e acho que esse é um exercício muito importante de cidadania. E muito pouco praticado. Por isso, esta decisão do Tribunal de Braga é uma forte machadada no funcionamento normal deste sistema e, se muita gente sentir o mesmo que o Alexandre, que diz ter ficado com “medo” de voltar a protestar, vamos ter problemas sérios. Tirar bits duma partição para outra, apagar partição e repetir o processo várias vezes. Incrível a quantidade de tralha que juntamos em vários anos. São aquelas imagens, pdfs e outros documentos que se vão guardando em pastas esquecidas com o propósito de uma dia mais tarde fazer algo com eles, com aquele programa que vi não sei aonde, também guardado numa outra pasta esquecida. Carradas de programas de shareware e freewares com os respectivos trojans, colecionados e guardados ao lado doutras pastas cheias de keygens, cracks e outros lixos. Foi uma autentica orgia com tanto tirar de bits e bites dum lado e meter noutro. Tira e mete, tira e mete e quando acabei estava sentindo algo como que um orgasmo e fiquei com um sorrizinho na cara, enquanto via e ouvia os discos rígidos a ronronarem de prazer. E como era fim de semana, era altura da troca de filmes e outro material com o CrimsonTuxer. Já sei que estão a pensar na barbaridade que acabei de escrever: "Trocar filmes?? Mas não tens o iTunes, essa maravilha mor da informática, inventada e benzida pelo maior génio da humanidade, o Steve Jobs?? Não conheces esse espectacular programa que te gere o iPhone que embora ainda não seja comercializado por cá é como se fosse, e que te gere os iPods, iGadgets e outros iLixos??" Pois não tenho! Hollywood is doing all it can to force The Pirate Bay offline, but it seems that the site only grows more and more, perhaps because of the extra publicity generated by anti-piracy activities. Most notable is Firefox 3.1, the next update to the Firefox 3 branch. It would add a few features that were not ready to ship in Firefox 3 development time frame. Among the most relevant: Support for the <video> as defined in the HTML 5 specification. Chris Double has been working on this for about a year now and there are even a few experimental Firefox builds featuring it with native Theora (Ogg) support. Specifically, as ICANN turned off the DNS service at the address formerly used by the L-root, 198.32.64.12 (and the routing announcement by ICANN for 198.32.64.0/24), DNS root queries sent to that address instead of the new L-root address (199.7.83.42) continued to be answered. At ICANN and for those who were aware of the situation this raised some eyebrows. Immediately after we turned off the old DNS server and noticed queries for the old address kept getting answers, we began looking into the issue by checking the DNS responses, reviewing routing system logs (including asking folks at Renesys and others for assistance), doing traceroutes from various points in the Internet, etc. Our investigation determined that the answers being provided by the machines now answering for the old L-root address were correct, returning proper referrals and answers including returning the correct address (199.7.83.42) for L-root, and as such, no immediate damage was being done. Tenho um colega que pouco sabe de PCs e lá vai se desenrascando a trabalhar no seu portátil com um xp. Tem pouca instrução, talvez a antiga 4ª classe, nada de ingles ou outra qualquer língua estrangeira. O que sabe é o que vai vendo os outros fazerem, e dando muitas cabeçadas no teclado do seu PC. Hoje pediu-me ajuda porque não conseguia fazer um CD de aúdio. Mostrou-me as músicas que guardou numa pasta sua, e depois mostrou qual o programa com que tentou criar o tal CD. Um Power qualquer coisa, não me lembro o nome mas tinha uma interface muito simples e em português, o que para ele é excelente. Ele escolhe a opção de CD de aúdio, abre-se uma interface onde ele navega até às suas músicas. Ao largar a tal música para a conversão deu erro e eu pensei logo: "só podia dar erro, é só música pimba misturada com música de ranchos folclóricos, dassse.." Mas não, era um ficheiro .m4a e o programa não suportava aquele formato. Tentei o CDex mas também não suportava aquilo. E começa o atrofio, googlar na net para saber que programa podia converter aquilo, redirecionado para páginas cheias de publicidade e pornografia, sites sem o mínimo de credibilidade que ofereciam programas e em que eu punha a mão no fogo em como eles vinham com trojans ou vírus. Muita porcaria na forma de shareware, e freewares mais que manhosos. Só me vinha uma pergunta à cabeça: "mas porque é que não existe no Windows algo como um adicionar e remover programas decente como existe nos Linuxes?? Um synaptic, só quero um synaptic!!!!" Lá arranjei um programinha freeware que converte aquele formato m4a para mp3 e ao instalar, ter o cuidado de não instalar barras e outras merdas que costumam vir juntas com o programa principal. Foi mais de meia hora para solucionar aquele problema e muito desconforto a trabalhar num sistema antiquado, inseguro e até desagradável. Realmente já não me consigo habituar e a estupidificar-me para trabalhar em windows. Meu rico Linux!!

Da próxima vez que reinstalar o meu desktop (que penso que esteja para breve), vou desistir de usar versões de 64 bits ponto. PS: 2nd crash PS2: Ainda por cima o ganho de x86_64 para i386 é quase marginal (link). Será culpa do gcc? Ou será que não há operações que envolvam mais de 32bits no software de hoje (para além de endereçamento superior a 4GB)?

If it makes you doze off in an uncomfortable theater seat even when you’re pumped about watching it, and well-rested and had a good night’s sleep. I sure as hell wasn’t sleepy or tired when I entered the movie theater for these films, but it took other moviegoers stepping on my toes as they made a beeline for the exits to wake me up and make me realize the credits were already rolling. Now most of these movies may be critically acclaimed or have won awards, but I might as well have been hit on the head with their trophies and they would have had the same effect on me. And that would have been a whole lot better. At least I wouldn’t have to pay just to get some sleep. 1. The Thin Red Line To hell with critics who relentlessly hail this film as one of the best of 1988. The presence of John Travolta, George Clooney, John Cusack, Sean Penn and all those other stars couldn’t stop me and the rest of the audience from catching Zs halfway through the movie. One of the most boring all-star snoozefests ever. 2. The English Patient They should rename this Oscar Best Picture winner “The English Patience”, because that is what the audience would need to sit through two love stories set during the Second World War. 3. Master and Commander The trailer for this Russell Crowe starrer has got to be one of the most misleading ever. Sure, the cannons and muskets going off are still in the movie, but they only comprise about a fourth of the film. The rest was mostly about two grown men gaily playing stringed instruments, exploring islands for strange creatures or mostly talking about stuff the audience couldn’t care less about. 4. Alexander I had such high hopes for Alexander, considering that the Macedonian conqueror was one of the most fascinating characters in history. What Oliver Stone gave us, however, was a film that dwelled a bit too much on Alexander’s suspected bisexuality, with ho-hum battle scenes in between. 5. The Royal Tenenbaums You would think that a comedy that has Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Gene Hackman and Bill Murray in the cast would be a laugh-out lout affair, not a snore out loud one. 6. Mission To Mars The only interesting part of the movie was the instant mummification of Tim Robbins’ character as he removed his helmet while still in space. Thankfully, I slept through the film after that and mercifully avoided the ultra-corny ending that my friend grumbled endlessly about on our way out of the theater. 7. House of the Dead How can a movie about zombies ever be boring? Simple: get German director Uwe Boll to direct it, and the Zs come real easy. 8. 2001 A Space Odyssey Admittedly, the film is really good for a science fiction film from the 60s, but it took me about six viewings before I finally got to finish the movie and see Dave Bowman’s metamorphosis into the “Star Child”. Maybe it’s HAL’s soothing voice that kept bearing down my eyelids the whole time, I’m not really sure. 9. The Ninth Gate This has got to be the most boring and most confusing Johnny Depp movie ever. I tried watching it on video and I still couldn’t keep my eyes open long enough to figure out what the hell the movie was all about. 10. Caligula All the gore and hardcore sex in this movie didn’t matter. It was boring with a capital D. Just proves that sex really is overrated. Share This
