Read Googlified in Multiple Languages

Posted: 23 Mar 2008 09:06 PM CDT

googlified using google language api

Traditionally, translating a blog post requires sending your readers to translation services, such as Google Translate and Babel Fish. However, with the revolutionary Google Language API, you can offer content in several languages right on your website now and better experience for the readers.

Due to the fact that I have too much free time during the Spring Break, I wrote a small piece of JavaScript code that uses the API to translate posts on this blog. You can test it out on this blog. It works in Windows’ version of Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7, Opera 9, and Safari 3, but it should work wherever the Google Language API works (but works better in FF & Opera in my tests).

Well, if you also want to have this cool tool on your site, I packed all the necessary files that you need to set the thing up into a 10kB .zip file, which included the script itself, a readme file, and a couple of flag icons by Mark James of Famfamfam.

Once again, this is not the greatest solution, but it works - brought to you by Haochi.

Nuno Silva: Divs instead of tables

Posted: 24 Mar 2008 01:00 AM CDT

Nuno Silva

One of the complicated things when we are doing a design is to doing it only using divs and not tables. Some of us always use tables. And why? because it’s simple? Maybe using div’s is not so dificult after all.

First, there are several reasons to use a div layout instead of a table based layout:

  • Flexibility: The main reason not to use tables in the main layout of your website is, in my opinion, flexibility. Has you can see in cssgarden, using divs to divide the content, turns the page layout into a flexible layout where you can make almost everything you want without change any html. If you want change the style of your page, you change the css. This is the way it should be made.
  • Separation of Concepts: Using a table based layout you are mixing two concepts: Style and Content. Why? Because using a table based layout you only need to write some xhtml (has you will see below).
  • Accessibility: Div layouts are more accessibility friendly.
  • SEO Optimization: A Div layout is more optimized for search engines crawls.
  • Bandwidth: using divs saves bandwidth because you need less xhtml to reach your objective.

I will take has example webgames.zi-yu.com, a website whose design is integrally constituted by divs but, in it’s original form, it was made using a table.

Let´s start with the layout of the page:

WebGames Layout

As we can see in the image above, there are 4 main areas, each one divided in subareas:

  • A: the main title
  • B: the left menu
  • C: the main content
  • D: the footer

Using tables this layout would be very simple to make:

	<table>
		<tr>
			<td rowspan="2">A1</td>
			<td colspan="2">A2</td>
		</tr>
		<tr>
			<td colspan="2">A3</td>
		</tr>
		<tr>
			<td rowspan="2">B1</td>
			<td colspan="2">C1</td>
		</tr>
		<tr>
			<td>C2</td>
			<td>C3</td>
		</tr>
		<tr>
			<td colspan="3">D1</td>
		</tr>
	</table>

With div’s the layout would be even simpler (and more easy to read - in my opinion, semantically correct). Let’s start by the beginning. We have 4 different areas, so we will have 4 different divs:

<div id="allContent">
	<div id="topMenu"></div>
	<div id="leftMenu"></div>
	<div id="mainContent"></div>
	<div id="footer"></div>
</div>

Now that we have the sections defined, let’s take care of the sub sections:

<div id="allContent">
	<div id="topMenu">
		<div id="logo"></div>
		<div id="topMenuUp"></div>
		<div id="topMenuDown"></div>
	</div>
	<div id="leftMenu"></div>
	<div id="mainContent">
		<div id="mainMenu"></div>
		<div id="mainContentLeft"></div>
		<div id="mainContentRight"></div>
	</div>
	<div id="footer"></div>
</div>

At this point all the sections of the page are defined. We only need to apply the css style to adjust it’s position and size. In this style (and in all the styles i make) i always consider a resolution of 1024×768. For this resolution, the maximum size i use is 1000, because of the vertical scroll of the browser. Normally this scroll is hidden but when it appears, the size of the layout is reduced and the horizontal scroll appears (thing that we don’t want).

So, considering the width of the layout 1000 pixels, let’s start with the logo:

#logo {
	width:252px;
	height:110px;
	float:left;
}

#topMenuUp {
	height:20px;
	border:0px;
}

#topMenuDown {
	height:90px;
	padding-left:0px;
	text-align:center;
	border-bottom:solid 1px black;
}

What the css above will do? Normally the 2 divs are positioned by default one below the other. So we will maintain that behavior for the div’s with the id topMenuUp and topMenuDown (only the height of them will be adjusted). Regarding the div with the id logo, we need to align it to the left, so we use float:left to obtain that result.

Next, the main content and the left menu. Generally i use the following stategy: if i have several containers in the same level, i separate them inside larger divs. So, i separated the leftMenu (area B of the picture above) and the div’s in the area C. The div’s in the area C i putted them inside a larger div in order to aligned them all at the same time into the right of the leftMenu div:

#leftMenu {
	width:252px;
	float:left;
	display:block;
}

#mainContent {
	width:745px;
	float:right;
	display:block;
}

Regarding the different sections inside the div mainContent, there is a top section (area C1), that will fill mainContent top, and two other div (areas C2 and C3) that will fill the rest of the div.

So regarding the div mainMenu (area C1), we will apply the following style:

#mainMenu {
	height:48px;
	padding:0;
	margin:0;
	clear:both;
}

The clear:both style is very important. It allows the div mainMenu not to have any content at it’s left or at it’s right. So, if other div (like the ones below) have a float style applied to it, that div will appear below mainMenu div.

Because the div mainMenu has the clear:both applied, the divs mainContentLeft and mainContentRight can be aligned with floats without a problem:

#mainContentLeft {
	float:left;
	width:584px;
}

#mainContentRight {
	float:right;
	width:160px;
}

Finally the footer. To this div i’ll just apply a clear:both style just to guaranty that no other div will overlap it:

#footer {
	height:48px;
	clear:both;
}

And that’s it, a layout that, at first sight, would be difficult to be made with divs, but, with simple css, it becomes very simple.

In conclusion, using divs, floats, clears and widths you can make almost any layout you want.

Hilary Duff’s Breasts Keep Growing!!!

Hilary Duff Pictures

I’ve know I’ve brought this up many times, but now I’m convinced Hilary Duff’s breasts have been enhanced - and not just by the push-up bra that she’s wearing. Judging by this old photo, and now this profile shot of her in a wifebeater, Hilary has some serious explaining to do. On another note, who else would have liked to have seen Hilary stuck in the rain with that top on… minus the bra, of course?

Já começaram as queixas sobre o Vista SP1

Posted: 21 Mar 2008 10:43 AM CDT

BitTorrent Sites Show Explosive Growth

Posted: 22 Mar 2008 06:00 AM CDT

BitTorrent’s popularity is growing every day. Despite efforts from anti-piracy outfits such as the MPAA and IFPI, torrent sites continue to grow traffic wise, and there is no sign that this trend will be brought to a halt anytime soon.

We decided to compile a list of the 25 most popular BitTorrent sites, and see how their (relative) popularity has grown over the past three months. Out of the 25 sites in the list, 21 improved their ranking in Alexa’s list of most popular sites on the Internet.

There are a few changes in the top 10 compared to the list of 2007’s top torrent sites. Mininova is still leading the bunch, but The Pirate Bay is now in second place, in front of isoHunt. Torrentportal and TorrentReactor traded places as well, the sites are now 7th and 9th respectively.

YouTorrent is the only newcomer, and it’s really impressive that the site made it into the top 25 only 2 months after its launch.

Note: Alexa’s data gathering is not perfect. The exact figures may be not be completely accurate, but it is a great tool (especially the traffic rank) to compare sites within the same niche and to get a global impression of traffic shifts over time.

Firefox Add-on compatibility plan for addons.mozilla.org

Posted: 24 Mar 2008 03:07 PM CDT

As we near the release of Firefox 3, the AMO team would like to share the plan for supported application maxVersions for Firefox add-ons and themes. The current supported maxVersion is “3.0b5pre”.

  • Once Firefox 3 Beta 5 is released, “3.0b5″ will be added to the list and in order to support nightly builds, “3.0pre” will be added to the list as well.
  • Upon release of the first release candidate (RC) of Firefox 3, we will add “3.0.*” as a supported maxVersion.
  • A list of supported Firefox versions is constantly maintained on AMO. As a reminder, please test your add-on, extension or theme before claiming compatibility.

Firefox 3 will use a three-part versioning system, as opposed to the four parts used in Firefox 2. In order to specify compatibility with security and stability releases, authors should use 3.0.* instead of 3.0.0.*.

A final reminder, if the only change required to make your add-on version compatible with a new Firefox release is a change in the install.rdf maxVersion, it is not necessary to upload a new version of the add-on. Simply change the maxVersion of the add-on in the addons.mozilla.org Developer Control Panel. Users will be presented with this new version as they upgrade their browsers.

I know you guys are probably getting sick of my obsession with Cheryl Tweedy, but who cares? She’s absolutely stunning and the closest thing to a perfect woman that I’ve ever seen. Not even that big tacky rose tattoo on her thigh bothers me; it just makes me curious to see where it leads - which I hope is her sacred rose bush. Anyway, here she is on some British talk show performing with her bandmates from Girls Aloud. Enjoy.

Lei de patentes é obsoleta e inútil

Posted: 25 Mar 2008 06:00 AM CDT

GMail Trends

gmail trends

Mihai Parparita, a developer at Google (mostly on Google Reader) and author of many cool things that you have heard of or used, released a Python program today called Mail Trends that “let’s you analyze and visualize your email.” The program will generate a page like the Trends page in Google Reader or that in Search History, with information such as the trend of the email’s incoming/outgoing traffics and “Top people that I send mail to”.

The program is currently for Gmail only, but it has plans to offer support for other email services (with IMAP). It should take only a few minutes to generate the Mail Trends page, but that really depends on how many emails you have (as well as your computer).

On a related note, Web History Trends haven’t been updated for almost 3 weeks.

Distribuição baseada no Ubuntu detecta traffic shapping

Posted: 25 Mar 2008 02:42 PM CDT

240 mil vezes zero = zero euros (linux)

240 mil vezes zero = zero euros (open-office)

total: zero euros

Here’s some sexy camera phone commercial starring the super hot Adriana Lima. It’s not in English so I have no clue what’s being said, but that’s not important because we get to see Adriana strip in and out of clothes. And that’s enough for me to buy whatever she’s selling. Don’t believe me? You should check out the underwear I have on now, they’re pretty sexy.

Novo OpenOffice.org 3 a chegar

Posted: 26 Mar 2008 05:25 AM CDT

Mail Trends looks deep into your in-box

Posted: 26 Mar 2008 07:10 AM CDT

Sorting out the overload of e-mail is one of the mostly unsolved problems of computing. The first step is analyzing your in-box, which is what Google developer Mihai Parparita has done with Mail Trends, a program that lets users analyze and visualize their inbox.

Mail Trends, which is similar to Google Reader Trends, extracts data from IMAP servers and displays statistics such as distribution of messages by year, month, day, day of week, and time of day; distribution by message size; a breakdown of top senders, recipients, and mailing lists; distribution of senders, recipients, and mailing lists over time; and distribution of thread lengths and the lists and people that result in the longest threads.

Via Googlified

An example of Mail Trends output running a small portion of the Enron Email Dataset, a corpus of about 500,000 messages that was made available by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission during its investigation of the Enron.

(Credit: Google)

Parparita notes that Mail Trends is at an early stage of development. It currently lacks support for non-Gmail servers and the capability to split out sent and starred e-mail. You can follow progress on the project on this Mail Trends page.

What's further missing is turning the analysis into proactive in-box management, a software agent that automatically sorts your in-box, makes calendar appointments, and routes messages.

Startup Xobni ("inbox" spelled backwards) is attempting to manage e-mail overload for Microsoft Outlook users. It includes some data analysis, such as how users and their contacts use e-mail, as well as some more proactive features. For example, Xobni shows recent e-mail conversations and files exchanged with a contact, and a list of related contacts. It also predicts when you would be most likely to get a response from a contact.

Microsoft Research has been working for years to come up with what it calls "e-mail triage." Apparently, Microsoft hasn't been able to turn the research into product. TechCrunch has suggested that Microsoft is in negotiations to acquire Xobni.

While Mail Trends is interesting to look at, Mail Triage would be much more useful. With all those engineers at Google devoting 20 percent of their time to personal projects, solving the Mail Triage problem would be a good way to get promoted and improve Gmail.

Today is Document Freedom Day

Posted by Zaheda Bhorat, Open Source Programs Manager

Today, the world is celebrating the first-ever Document Freedom Day. More than 200 teams in 60 countries are spending today raising awareness about document freedom by hosting speakers, events, and literally raising the DFD flag. Through such activities, these teams are committed to spreading the word about the importance of open documents and the workable open standards that ensure your access to your documents now and in the future. We at Google wholeheartedly join the community of users, organisations, businesses, governments and individuals around the world in today's celebration.

Our mission concerning the world's information is well known. Naturally, your access to your information is also important to us. When you save a document, you need to be sure that the information in it will be accessible tomorrow, a month from now, ten years from now. How and where you choose to access your documents shouldn't make a difference. This is what Document Freedom Day is about.

Five years ago, who would have thought that we'd be accessing the documents we created then on our cell phones? And yet today we expect this. The standard by which your document is formatted today absolutely needs to be readable and available to those who design the technology for tomorrow. This is the only way that you will know for sure that the information you entrust to your documents now will be yours for as long as you want it to be.

So wherever you are, join the fun and support your freedom to access your information. Find out more and help to spread the word: Document freedom means freedom of information for all of us, now, later and long, long into the future.

Google Sets, the Search Engine for Lists

Posted: 26 Mar 2008 04:07 PM CDT

SEO by the Sea points to an interesting patent that describes how Google Sets works. Google Sets is one of the first services that were added to Google Labs and it's a cool way to find list of related terms. Google Sets is a tool that generates lists from a small number of examples by using the web as a big pool of data. You enter some items and Google Sets finds other items that tend to co-occur frequently with your examples. For example, you could enter Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Rudy Giuliani and get a list of US presidential candidates.
One particular type of information often present on the web includes lists, such as lists of restaurants, lists of automobiles, lists of names, etc. Lists may be identified in a number of different ways. For example, a list may include an ordered list or unordered list. Special tags in a HyperText Markup Language (HTML) document identify the presence of ordered and unordered lists. An ordered list commences with an <OL> tag; whereas an unordered list commences with an <UL> tag. Each item in an ordered or unordered list is preceded by an <LI> tag.

Another type of list may include a definition list. A special tag in a HTML document identifies the presence of a definition list. A definition list commences with a <DL> tag. Each item in a definition list is preceded by a <DT> tag. Yet another type of list may include document headers. Special tags in a HTML document identifies headers using <H1> through <H6> tags. Other types of lists may be presented in yet other ways. For example, a list may be presented as items in a table or as items separated by commas or tabs.

After identifying lists on the web, Google generates a probabilistic model from the examples provided by users and classifies the lists according to the model. The items are assigned weights based on the classified lists and the weights are added to form a list based on the total weights.

Google to Add Language Translation in Gmail

Posted: 26 Mar 2008 04:13 PM CDT

ComputerWorld reports that Google intends to integrate its language translation service in Gmail and Google Talk. There are already bots that could facilitate an IM conversation with a person that speaks a language you don't know, but it would be much better to have the feature built in. Even if the translation is far from perfect and often incoherent, you'll understand the main ideas.

"What you need for real-time automated machine translation is large amounts of compute power, which we have, and large amounts of data, which we have. Imagine a system that can do on-the-fly translation of things like e-mail, documents and IM chat. That's a feature you can see on the horizon," said Google's Matt Glotzbach.

Apparently, Google is also developing tools for videoconferencing "to augment internal training programs and to serve as a hosted alternative to pricey videoconferencing software". Last year, Google acquired Marratech's video conferencing software.

In the past few years, Google started to preannounce features and services, but they were either released late or not released at all. We're still waiting for phone calls in Google Talk, tasks in Google Calendar, Gmail folders, Knol, Google Health.

Vida

Ah, o medinho!...

Posted: 27 Mar 2008 08:25 AM CDT

O melhor nevoeiro tenebroso desde The Fog.

Firefox 4 will push out the edges of the browser

Posted: 27 Mar 2008 05:45 PM CDT

Chris Beard, VP Labs, Mozilla

(Credit: Rafe Needleman / CNET)

This post has been corrected from the original: Mozilla has no plan to ship Firefox 4 this year; references to that effect have been removed.

After the product road map roundtable I live-blogged Wednesday, I had a talk with Chris Beard, VP of Labs for Mozilla. Beard is working on the things you won't see in Firefox 3, but will, if he has his way, surface in Firefox 4.

Beard's philosophy is this: The browser needs to evolve. Beard believes the browser concept hasn't fundamentally changed in 10 years. It's still an isolated piece of software, he says. Mozilla Lab's push is to blur the edges of the browser, to make it both more tightly integrated with the computer it's running on, and also more hooked into Web services. So extended, the browser becomes an even more powerful and pervasive platform for all kinds of applications.

At the moment, these are two separate projects Mozilla is running to push out the edges of the browser: Prism and Weave.

Prism

Prism is Mozilla's shot at busting apps out of the browser. Part of the Prism project is making the browsing core available to apps developers so they can build products like Zimbra Desktop (review) that are essentially Web apps, but that don't look like it.

The dream is to be able to take any Web site or app and turn it into an app that can run directly from the desktop. A very big part of this initiative is to make sites/apps work when they are not connected to the Internet. HTML 5 (the next version of the basic standard for the encoding of Web sites) includes explicit support for local, offline resources.

HTML 5 and Prism will, Mozilla execs say, render Google Gears obsolete. Not to mention other important, and proprietary, Web app platforms that are already in production, like Adobe AIR and Microsoft Silverlight (What is Silverlight?).

Weave

Weave extends the browser in the other direction: Not toward the desktop, but instead into the Internet. Mozilla wants an individual's browsing experience to stay with them no matter what machine they are on. That means synchronizing bookmarks, home pages, favorites, and passwords to an online service that the user can attach to when he or she fires up the browser. As more people move between browsing machines (their laptop and their mobile phone, for example, or between different PCs), this will become more important.

Firefox 3 is laying the groundwork for this. It has a new transactional database that stores user preferences and favorites. However, it won't be used for cross-browser syncing in version3; Beard hopes this extension to the database is rolled out in Firefox 4.

Firefox 3 users will, though, experience some online services being fed into their browser. For example, Mozilla will update all running browsers every 30 minutes with malware signatures, to stave off drive-by downloads and phishing scams.

Beard wants the new online/offline, browser/service to be more intelligent on behalf of its users. Early examples of this intelligence include the "awesome bar," which is what Mozilla calls the new smart address bar in Firefox 3. It offers users smart URL suggestions as they type based on Web searches and their prior Web browsing history. He's looking to extend on this with a "linguistic user interface" that lets users type plain English commands into the browser bar. Beard pointed me towards Quicksilver and Enso as products he's cribbing from.

Beard said the Labs are playing with other "crazy ideas," but that Prism and Weave technologies are are being targeted at the next version of Firefox.

Map your family in more ways than one with It's Our Tree

Posted: 27 Mar 2008 09:18 PM CDT

It&#39;s Our Tree logo

It's Our Tree is a genealogy service that lets people create very simple family trees using Adobe Flash. Like Geni (review) and Kindo (review), the idea is to get your entire family involved by inviting them to join and add family members they remember. It doesn't offer some advanced services like DNA sleuthing using cheek cells, but it's incredibly simple to get started, and the finished product can double as a Rolodex, birthday reminder, and private e-mail system for you and your family.

Like Geni and others, to get started you simply add family members using the directional arrows found on each person's block. There's support for divorces, first, second, and third marriages, half siblings, and any other oddly conceived (literally) member of your extended family. It also supports nine different languages, meaning if you're trying to share your tree with your Italian grandmother she'll be able to see it in her language, including the invite to participate. It's a nice touch if your family is spread out.

Each family member you (or others) create gets his or her own profile in case you feel like turning the service into an updatable family phone tree. My one irk with this is that they don't take advantage of a pre-existing contact-management service like Plaxo, Gmail's contact list, or LinkedIn to save you some time of having to dig all that up. What does make these profiles interesting is that you can add all sorts of geo-data to your family members including the place of birth, death, burial, and present location. This information can be toggled on a large Google map, which can lead to some really great exploration if you're willing to spend the time researching and inputting it all. Ancestry.com's DNA service will do something similar, although it actually shows you where your family is from based on cultural migration.

I'm giving this service a thumbs up, although if you're already tied to one of these services, its feature set is nearly identical to Geni and Kindo, so give it a look before trying to get your whole family to convert. Grandma will say grazie.

Make your family tree quickly and easily with It's Our Tree. It's got support for half siblings, deaths, and geo-location for where people were born. (Click to enlarge.)

Sistemas operativos (Pro Teste - Edição nº 290 - Abril 2008)

SO Expansão Seguraça Compatibilidade Global Resultado Resultado+Global
Windows Vista 3 3 2 2 8 10
Windows XP 3 1 4 3 8 11
Ubuntu 5 4 2 3 11 14
Leopard 4 4 2 3 10 13
Leopard (comp.c/Apple) 4 4 3 3 11 14

So are you guys sick of Cheryl Tweedy yet? If so, then get the hell off this site. The girl is here to stay and any chance I get to share pictures of her with you, I will, because I’m in love and I don’t fall in love very often. Now I know when I get home my girlfriend is going to be extremely pissed at me because I have yet to tell her that I love her… but we’ve only been dating for like 4 years and I don’t like rushing things. Sorry baby, I’m just being honest. But hey, you’re a great f$#k and I love that about you. That counts for something, right?

Luckily for us, the shirt isn’t winning - and it’s not even close. Yes, I think Posh and her super nipples have met their match: Cheryl Tweedy’s super cleavage!

Melhoramentos no OpenOffice.org 2.4

So I’m finally back from LA. Sorry I was a day late, but as usual when I travel things always seem to get messed up. The flight I was on managed to get overbooked by 4 people and lucky me got pushed to another flight. I hope Rick took good care of you guys.

While down there, I hopped over and met Tila Tequila at a photo shoot in some castle in The Hills, which was pretty interesting since most of the photo shoots I’ve ever been involved with were in sleazy motels with lots of lube. Anyway, Tila and I are dating now, so there’s really no point in watching the next season of MTV’s A Shot at Love. Alright, that’s a lie, but I’m definitely now her sexiest “Stripper Friend.”

Webware 100: Celebrating the short snout

Posted: 31 Mar 2008 08:15 PM CDT

We closed the voting for the 2008 Webware 100 today, after recording more than 1.9 million votes. Webware 100 Winners will be announced April 21 (we need time to go over the polling logs and write up blurbs for the winners). But in the meantime, we can already spot the major trends. The biggest shift, from last year, is that fewer sites for geeks are in the winners' circle.

In the hotly-contested Social category, for example, only the very largest sites generated enough votes to place in the Top 10. Even sites considered must-reads by the powerful nerd intelligentsia didn't have the pull to displace the major branded social networks.

Webware.com will continue to report on what's new, and will continue to evaluate the most recent innovations on the Web--the products of greatest interest to those of us who like to experiment with the newest ideas. We use programs such as the Webware 100 as a backstop, to show us which of these products and ideas are getting traction out there in the real world.

Vote distribution: Browsing and Social were the most contested.

Advanced Pre-Registration Detection Tool Released

Posted: 01 Apr 2008 03:40 AM CDT

UdprpWe have spent months creating the “Who’s It Gonna Be” Tool. No longer will intellectual property attorneys need to track down offenders of trademarks in domain names. The technology is roughly based around the Psychic Whois system we released last year. The new system stops all trademark registrations before they happen. The technology uses proprietary algorithms and millions of whois queries and extensive history to come up with predictions on who will register any given domain name in the future. The system will email challenging lawyers prior to the registration of a domain to let them know they may want to object to the registration prior to it actually getting registered. They can either register the domain before the offending registrant or they can choose to take the registrant to court to stop them. If the registrant is not alerted by an attorney prior to the registration, they are guaranteed that the domain is trademark-free and that no one will sue them over the domain.

UdprpOur technology is now so good we believe we can predict what people will registered about 36 hours before they commit the crime. This is clearly a win-win for everyone involved in the domain industry. There will no longer be squatters and only true domainers will be registering new domains. Attorneys will be able to send out “cease and desist” letters to suspected registrants to keep them on their toes. “This is keeping us one step ahead of the bad guys” said an IP attorney who wished to remain anonymous. The tool will likely cause a serious outcry in the domainer community but eventually everyone should accept it. Lawyers have begun private beta testing of the service two months ago and it will be released to everyone later this week. Please email us if you would like access to the private beta as signups are limited.

ICANN has indicated this new, “Who’s It Gonna Be” technology will allow them to form a new UDPRP (Uniform Domain Pre-Registration Policy). Cases will be more proactive than the current UDRP. We’re happy we can assist ICANN in making the world safer one domain at a time.

Google April Fool's Jokes Galore

Posted: 01 Apr 2008 07:32 AM CDT

Japan started early with the April 1st specialties, but the jokes continue. Thanks to everyone who helps collecting Google’s April Fool’s pranks in the forum (or sent in things via mail)! Here’s the list of Google’s jokes and Google-related pranks from over the web, which I may update during the day (for all items I’ll add the disclaimer that it’s likely it’s a hoax, but some of the items may not be!):

  • Google Book Search now supports reproducing the smell of scratch-and-sniff based books. “Using special equipment and tricky JavaScript, we’re now able to capture some of the smells during the scanning process and then embed them in your web browser when you preview these titles in Google Book Search,” their blog says, pointing to several examples.
  • The Google Talk blog reports wants to help lower CO2 emissions and starts reducing the characters you send... by converting them to instant-messenger-speak. For instance, the sentence “As far as I’m concerned, you can give me the twenty dollars you owe me when I see you later.” will be automatically translated to “AFAIC, U can gve me the 20 $$ YOM whn I CUL8R.” before it reaches the other person. You can already see how your texts will translate thanks to the working en...@bot.talk.google.com bot.
  • Google started Virgle, a team-up Google Inc and the Virgin Group. The goal? To establish a permanent human settlement on Mars, because as Virgin’s Richard Branson writes on the official Google blog, “Larry Page, Sergey Brin and I feel strongly that contemporary technology is sufficiently advanced to make such an effort both successful and economical, and that it’s high time that humanity moved beyond Earth and began our great, long journey to explore the stars and establish our first lasting foothold on another world.” In a video, Sergey Brin announces “We’re going to select the very first settlers of the planet Mars.” The apparent reason for launching this project now seems to be that “Earth has issues,” as the Virgle homepage states.
  • The German Google Watch Blog announced they’ll be shutting down to launch a competitor to Google Street View for Germany. Image samples from Berlin and other locations are provided in the post. Called CityMap, the service has a nice feature of overlaying people’s faces with smileys to better protect their privacy.
  • Ionut Alexandru Chitu got the scoop on OpenGoogle. The product sounds nice – “The project ... will allow anyone to create a search engine that uses Google’s index, but has a custom ranking algorithm and a personalized interface. You’ll be able to select from a list of approximately 100 ranking signals like: the page’s self-importance, the number of original ideas, the IQs of their authors, the number of links from Wikipedia, and decide their importance.” – but I get a feeling Google and the web at large is over-using the “open” word. On a side-note, the OpenGoogle system determines that Ionut’s IQ is 125; when I asked Ionut for a statement he told me it’s “off by 50” though he didn’t say in which direction.
  • YouTube is rickrolling its users big-scale. All the featured videos on the YouTube.com frontpage are currently linking to Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. Or, as a commenter at YouTube puts it in the comments to the video, “HAHAHAHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA lol nice youtube”.
  • Over the next days, Google Documents will roll out a Google Gears-powered offline version (I can’t see it yet). Straight from the an official Google Docs Blog announcement and as discussed in our forum, this has to be the silliest joke of them all, because in this day and age, nobody is ever offline, so it’s a useless feature. “When I lose my connection, I sacrifice some features,” the Google Docs blog writes, putting up a straw man argument, “but I can still access my documents... Everything I need is saved locally ... When my connection comes back, my documents sync up again with the server.”
  • Google Australia delivers gDay with MATE technology to “search content on the internet before it’s created,” i.e., from the future. From the page: “Google spiders crawl publicly available web information and our index of historic, cached web content. Using a mashup of numerous factors such as recurrence plots, fuzzy measure analysis, online betting odds and the weather forecast from the iGoogle weather gadget, we can create a sophisticated model of what the internet will look like 24 hours from now.” I saw this yesterday already and tried to search for “Google Blogoscoped” and indeed, found this post and opened its Google Cache version – I was then able to copy the full text of the post, which saved me a lot of writing today.
  • A website covering alternative search engines urges people to make April 1st the new Annual Day Without Google. “Choose one, choose several, but for One Day give the Alternative search engines a fighting chance and see what life would be like without Google. It will be alright. Really.” (I’ll pass – while I could probably imagine to stop use Google search entirely, I’m totally addicted to Google Shared Stuff, which is way better than Friendfeed.)
  • Also, if you open a new Google Document – log-in to Docs and pick New -> Document – you can then pick File -> “New airplaine” from the menu. This will result in a document pre-loaded with a paper airplane folding layout.
  • As reported, Google Japan now delivers special “Dajare” (Japanese puns) onebox results. This search will show one of them, for instance.
  • Jon Henshaw reports that cars of the Google Street View fleet are now forced to paint road lines while driving the streets of Nashville. The Nashville Mayor is quoted to have said, “These Google cars ride up and down our streets, sometimes 12 or 5 times back and forth. They’re making pot holes, causing wrecks and costing our city millions of dollars ... If they’re going to ruin our streets, then they’re going to fix them at the same time.”
  • Gmail now offers a “custom time” feature. The Google custom time help page explains you need to click “Set custom time” from the Compose view. Then, “Any email you send to the past appears in the proper chronological order in your recipient’s inbox. You can opt for it to show up read or unread by selecting the appropriate option.” According to their explanations, Gmail utilizes an “e-flux capacitor to resolve issues of causality.” Finally – I was wishing for this exact thing back in August 2004!
  • PC World describes a new Google effort to organize all of human ignorance. Google CEO Eric Schmidt says, “Admittedly, human ignorance is vast – perhaps unlimited – but our goal is to organize all of it. Consistent with our mobile strategy, we aim to provide anytime, anywhere ignorance.” Eric adds the feature may not be for everyone, but that “Here at Google we just want to give people options. Ignorance is an option and we want people to have that option.”
  • Google China invests in human search. Google’s automated translation of the homepage sheds more light on this (in a you’re-in-a-dark-cellar-wearing-sunshades-and-your-tiny-flashlight-is-half-empty kind of lightshedding way): “Not only can people search meat in the shortest possible time to expose the truth behind a certain door for a three public recognition of a seven find the moral position, but also not in the reach of the network, and explore the jungle found the most beautiful girls, the most moving mountains pastoralists, the most mysterious desert cave, the ultimate romantic encounter…… meat search pursuit of the highest goal is: do not seek the best, but for the most meat.”
  • Google competitor Microsoft in the mean-time came up with a plan that’s so crazy it just might work, Search Engine Land reports. Instead of buying Yahoo to beat Google, they will pay people in the US $1 million per year to not use Google. A special program will monitor their web activitiy to ensure this. Danny Sullivan comments, “Absurdly expensive? It can seem that way at first, but consider the math. There’s an estimated 300 million people living in the United States. If you pay each one $1 million for the next three years, that’s just under $1 billion. That saves Microsoft $39 billion compared to what it was going to spend on purchasing Yahoo.”
  • In case you have trouble getting out of the bed in the morning, Google Calendar’sWake Up Kit” uses notifications which are “progressively more annoying” to wake you up. From the description: “First it will send an SMS message to your phone. If that fails, more coercive means will be used. The kit includes an industrial-sized bucket and is designed to be connected to your water main for automatic filling.”
  • Google’s social network site Orkut turned into Yogurt today, according to their logo.
  • The Virtual Tourism blog found out that Google Street View censors the logos of competing companies, like Yahoo, Microsoft or Apple. In a live demo, you can reproduce how when you near towards the Apple store, the view goes black, noting “The image is no longer available.”
  • Google Calendar has a new “I’m feeling lucky” button. Just log-in to your calendar, click on a day, and in the box that pops up, hit the Feeling Lucky button. Now a random new event will be added, like one reading “Date with Anna Kournikova” (or George W. Bush, Lois Griffin and others).
  • Search Engine Roundtable has not one but four news items today. Including “Microsoft Buys Yahoo So Google Buys Microsoft in Hostile Takeover” and “Matt Cutts Transfers to Performics - Will Assume Lead SEO Role”. In regards to the latter item, Barry Schwartz writes, “Google has decided to reinforce Performics, a company that came with the Doubleclick Acquisition, by transferring long time search quality lead Matt Cutts into a role with the search engine optimization firm. This immediately strengthens the perceived value of working with Performics, since Matt is obviously very familiar with the Google algorithm”.
  • The Google Sightseeing blog reports on two new view mode in Google Earth and Google Maps. One is x-ray, the other is thermal imagery; with these new modes, you can literally see inside buildings.
  • Questions and answers service Uclue shows proof that Larry and Sergey grabbed their April Fool’s ideas from their site. “Every year we run an April Fools gag at our site, in an attempt to gain a bit of publicity,” the Google co-founders post on the site, “We’re a bit short of ideas to use for this year. Could you provide a few suggestions for us to choose from?”
  • The Googlified blog seems to be closing shop; it currently replaced all articles with a LOLCAT-flavored Google search engine. A button reads, “I can has lucky?”

You can also add your comments in the respective forum threads.
