Don't forget that the deadline for the Mass Cultural Council individual
artist grants is swiftly approaching. Don't miss this. Playwrights
are not eligible every year because there are funding cycles.

I can't apply, as I'm currently in a grad playwriting program. But I
definitely would if I could.

Why should you apply?

You could get a grant for new work along with the nice recognition that
comes with it. However, completely aside from that factor, by applying
you're casting your vote for increased funding for individual
dramatists at the state level. The numbers of those applying in each
discipline are tracked and reports are always drafted about how many
applied in this vs. that and so on, and that is in addition to the
public reports that go out showing how funding is distributed. If
double or triple the number of playwrights from previous years apply
(i.e. all of us who have participated in the local short play festivals
and submit to those), then we could form a significant statistic.

Also, with enough people applying it would also show that there is a
demand for assistance for individual playwrights at state and city
levels and it indicates how many of us there are out here working on it
and doing what we can.

By the way, it's not just lip service that certain out of town
playwrights are billed as locals when larger companies develop their
work and put on their stuff. That goes down in the grant writing copy,
too...

In the organizational support category, the funding amounts are:
A.R.T. $54,000
Huntington $62,500

The BCA got $10,900. Now the BCA is raising rates for rentals,
essentially making space issues even more difficult for us and for
smaller theatre companies. Stage Source got only $8,200.

The funding of A.R.T., Huntington, New Rep, and Wang together in 2006
almost equals all the 2006 individual artist grants combined...

So apply, damn it.

Thanks for posting it. I haven't a snowball's chance, but I'll give it a
shot anyway.
