Just got a call from an MTNL official from Delhi who is agitated that his name was mentioned on the internet by one 'Shivam Vij' on Rediff. I've sent MTNL a couple of mails with screencaps of pings since the 14th. He feels that they're not to blame.
About the situation, he first denied that they'd received any directive from the government. When I mentioned a journo's chat in my presence with someone in the government last evening, he said that they received a list of websites from CERT-IN in May, and these are exonding (offending???) websites, and my site (http://mixedbag.blogspot.com) is not on the list so it can't possibly be blocked.
He was unable to understand the difference between *.blogspot.com and http://banned.blogspot.com, in spite of my best efforts.
According to him, he is able to access all blogs so the problem must be from my end, not realising that he might be accessing the net from a different line. On being told that other users are facing the same problem, he said that there must be some problem from Reliance (Flag Telecom) because that's where they're getting the data from. Kept clarifying that they've not blocked anything, and have done no wrong.
He is also extremely pissed that Shivam mentioned his name in the article on Rediff ('Kis haisiyat se?', 'Kya matlab hain' and similar utterances). He asked for Shivam's phone number and the organisation he works for, which I said I didn't have. Mr. Sharma is considering legal action against Shivam and/or Rediff, and is going to search the Internet for Shivam's email address. He's probably afraid of being made a scapegoat. He did sound agitated.
MTNL's call center i suppose works the same way that most customer call centers around the world and in India work... telco call centers record all incoming calls for quality assurance purposes. And giving out his name or that of someone else's is standard protocol for followup by either client or 3rd party. If he requested someone's phone number.. ie. a client's.. then what type of quality assurace tracking systems have they in effect? they should be able to retrieve any information from that call... doesn't take a genius to figure that out.. Secondly, it would be a pr disaster for them to think about going and suing rediff, a blogger, etc. it would come off as them trying to play the blame game.
my 0.2 :)

I don't know if I should thank you for this Nikhil!
1) This is what the Rediff article says, "R H Sharma, senior engineer with MTNL, said the list ran into some 22 pages." I'll get sued for just a sentence? I don't mind. High time somebody sued me for something.
2) As for hasiyat and matlab, I had identified myelf as a "blogger and freelance journalist".
3) I work not for any organiation but for myself.
4) Please tell him that my email is mail at shivamvij dot com. I'll be happy to send him my residence address. I'll be hapy to rceive a legal notice.
Best, Shivam

The call was from back-end, not the call center. MTNL doesn't even give you a complaint number...My phone number is there in my email signature and he called me up. I think it was just a hollow threat, but he sounded quite determined. We know from experience that not everyone is concerned about PR. Cases in point - IIPM and ToI. Somebody's got to pay for this.
All I wanted to do was find out whether they're doing anything to correct the problem (if it is a glitch), or are they waiting for orders. I was rather surprised that he asked if I know you. Looks like you're famous. :)
He might have called me on my cell from a direct line, so if you want the number, mail me. Thought you'd like to be forewarned. He's *probably* just scared that his head might be on the chopping block, and wants you to remove the mention, lest his superiors see it. Haisiyat, matlab, organisation...maybe you should tell him. I didn't want to be the one telling on a fellow blogger. He'd asked me to mail him your email address if I come across it. Will do so now since you both want to be in touch.

I called up as per your instructions Cuckoo. The voice said, "Iss rout ki sabhi lyenay vyastha hain. Kripya thodi der baad phone karey. All lines to This route are busy. Please try after some time."
But strangely, the voice wasn't a female one this time. It sounded like a babu's :)
