Five dead in Philippines landslides*
MANILA, Oct 28 (AFP) Oct 28, 2007
Five people were killed and three missing after heavy rains triggered
floods and landslides in the eastern Philippines overnight, the civil
defence office said Sunday.
Torrential rains battered the island of Catanduanes, causing landslides
that buried five people, three of them children, the office said in a
statement.
Three fishermen were also missing, the office said without giving details.
Floods also hit the eastern provinces of Albay and Camarines Sur.
Poverty forces many Filipinos to reside in unsafe places where they are
vulnerable to mudslides or flashfloods during the heavy rains and
typhoons that frequently hit the country.
