FIREFIGHTERS are battling two bushfires in southern Tasmania.

Fire has raged through 2000ha of bush east of Hobart, near Kellevie.

Yesterday, firefighters saved more than 12 houses as fires swept through
thick bush.

Several roads were closed yesterday after the Kellevie Road bridge was
damaged and 12 electricity poles were destroyed, cutting power to 300
properties.

Residents have been advised to activate bushfire plans and be prepared
to defend their property and those who decide to evacuate should do so
quickly.

A blaze has burnt 950ha of light bush near the rural hamlet Elderslie,
about 40km north of Hobart.

Tasmania Fire Service service Jeremy Smith said the fire had travelled
southeast along Bluff Road, which was now closed. Residents still had
access to their homes.

He said the area where the fires were raging was extremely steep and
rough and was difficult to access.

He said cooler weather today had slowed the fires and provided an
opportunity to build containment lines to control the fires.

Fire crews are expected to patrol Elderslie and Kellivie well into the
weekend with temperatures forecast in the low 30s.
