South Australia braces for bushfires*

November 21, 2006 09:50am
Article from: AAP

HIGH temperatures and strong winds have firefighters across South
Australia on high alert today.

The Country Fire Service (CFS) said the fire danger across the state
would be extremely high, with temperatures above 40 degrees in some areas.

Acting chief officer Andrew Lawson said today was not a day to be
complacent.

"Conditions are going to be severe and if bushfires occur, our volunteer
firefighting capacity could be pushed to the limit,'' Mr Lawson said.

"We're going to have more days like this over the next six months and
while the CFS is bushfire ready, it's important that the community is
also bushfire ready.''

Yesterday's hot conditions across South Australia sparked 43 fires, with
most started by lightning in grasslands east of Adelaide.

The largest burnt about 300 hectares near Ki Ki.

A fire also caused damage to the Arboretum at the University of
Adelaide's Waite Campus in Adelaide's eastern suburbs.

Campus director Geoff Fincher said few trees suffered serious damage but
a full audit was still to be conducted.
