POLICE in California were forced to shoot a man dead as he punched and
stomped on a toddler in the middle of a country road.
Witnesses called police after the 27-year-old man parked his car in the
middle of the rural road in Stanislaus County late on Saturday and
pulled a 12-to 24-month-old boy out of the vehicle, the
McClatchy-Tribune news service reported.
Passersby who called police tried to stop him but he was "totally
fixated", sheriff's spokesman Royjindar Singh told McClatchy-Tribune.
A police helicopter on patrol was first on the scene .
"The helicopter spotlights the scene and sees this guy just beating on
this infant or baby in the middle of the road. I can't imagine what that
looked like," Mr Singh said.
The helicopter landed in a nearby field.
A police officer ordered the man to stop and fired when he "continued to
stomp the child", Mr Singh said.
The man died instantly while the child was pronounced dead on arrival at
hospital.
Authorities also would not disclose the identity of the dead man and the
boy nor their relationship.
