COMMUNITIES in the north of Western Australia are being urged to prepare
for an active and intense cyclone [tornado] season.
WorkSafe WA Commissioner Nina Lyhne said today it was crucial everyone
on sea and on land knew what to do when there was a cyclone in the area
during the WA season which runs until April.
"The cyclone season officially began yesterday, and the Bureau of
Meteorology has forecast more cyclones this season than last," Ms Lyhne
said in a statement.
"Under WA's occupational safety and health laws, employers must have
adequate plans and provide adequate training to protect workers in the
event of a cyclone."
During the average WA season five cyclones will form off the northwest
coast, two will cross the coast and there is usually at least one severe
storm.
Last season, three people were killed or fatally injured when Cyclone
George flattened parts of the Pilbara on March 9 with 275 km/h winds.
