Bulgaria swelters in record temperatures*

SOFIA, June 23 (AFP) Jun 23, 2007

Bulgaria registered Saturday its highest temperatures since records
began a century ago following a week-long heat wave, weather officials
said, as health officials urged people to remain indoors.

The national meteorology institute said that the mercury shot to record
levels in at least 11 towns around the country.

Temperatures reached 39.9 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in
the northern town of Lovech, and over 35 degrees in the capital Sofia.

The National Electricity Company warned that the increased use of air
conditioners may cause power cuts in the Balkan state. Health experts
urged people to remain indoors during the day.

Railway authorities were forced to cut the speed of trains in some
regions to 30 kilometres per hour (18 miles per hour), as rails were
being deformed by the heat.

Heavy trucks travelling on the E-80 highway to the border with Greece
and Turkey were asked to park at the side of the road and wait for the
heat to subside.
