Lava flows from Etna through uninhabited area*

ROME, Dec 1 (AFP) Dec 01, 2006

Lava flowed from a new fissure in Mount Etna on Friday, but stayed clear
of inhabited areas, the national geophysical institute of volcanology in
Catania, Sicily said.

The lava flowed a hundred metres (330 feet) down the mountainside where
it joined other flows started in the past few days.

Etna rumbled back into activity last week, spewing clouds of ash and
causing the closure of Catania airport. Flights were grounded for the
eighth consecutive night from Friday to Saturday.

"The volcanic activity is not abating and is not therefore giving us the
chance of reopening the airport during the night for safety reasons,"
the airport's crisis unit said in a statement.

Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, rumbled into activity
in autumn 2004 and again in July 2006.
