Severe Storms batter Australian coast*

AUSTRALIA - WILD winds, torrential rain and hail brought down trees and
peeled roofs off homes in the NSW central west overnight.

Residents of Nyngan were plunged into darkness as fierce weather lashed
the town about 8pm (AEDT), bringing down power lines and trees.

The State Emergency Service (SES) received 30 requests for assistance to
homes and businesses that lost roofs or suffered hail and flood damage.

The local RSL and council depot were hard-hit, with a motel also
suffering roof and brick damage.

Six homes partially or completely lost their roofs, and scores of power
lines had been felled by fallen trees, said SES spokesman David Webber.

"There's been lots of minor damage and a bit of major damage, mostly in
the two main streets, with reports of a large number of trees down and
power down," Mr Webber said.

Emergency crews were en route from the Hunter and Broken Hill, with more
likely to be flown in from Sydney to help protect the damaged premises
from further rain expected later today.

Removing fallen trees and securing power infrastructure was also a major
priority, Mr Webber said.

Power was restored early today but fallen lines still posed a
electrocution risk and residents were urged to be cautious.
